Hulu is taking a closer look at one of Florida’s most closely watched murder cases with a new four-part true-crime docuseries.

Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel will examine the 2014 killing of Markel, a Florida attorney and law professor whose death was later determined to be the result of a murder-for-hire plot. The series premieres September 1 and will feature new interviews, previously unheard audio, and accounts from people connected to the investigation.

According to Deadline, the series focuses on the complicated family relationships surrounding Markel’s murder and the custody dispute that followed his divorce from Wendi Adelson. Markel was shot and killed inside his Tallahassee home in July 2014. Prosecutors later argued that the killing was connected to the dispute over his children.

The case has continued to draw major attention because several members of the Adelson family became connected to the investigation and subsequent trials.

Five people have been convicted in connection with Markel’s murder: Donna Adelson, Wendi Adelson’s mother; Charlie Adelson, Wendi’s brother; Sigfredo Garcia; Katherine Magbanua; and Luis Rivera.

Wendi Adelson has never been charged in the case. Prosecutors have described her as an “unindicted co-conspirator,” while she has denied involvement in the murder.

The new Hulu series promises to revisit those complicated relationships while also looking at how investigators eventually built the case.

One of the most notable interviews comes from Rob Adelson, the oldest son of the Adelson family. Rob has been estranged from his family for years and testified against his mother, Donna, during her trial. In a recorded conversation with FBI agent Pat Sanford, he discusses his family and his experience becoming involved in the prosecution.

Sanford is also featured in the series. He spent much of his career working on the investigation into Markel’s death and will speak publicly about the case in what is described as a first-time interview for the documentary.

Another new interview comes from June Umchina, who was previously in a relationship with Charlie Adelson. She is expected to provide insight into their relationship and discuss what Charlie allegedly told her about Markel’s murder.

The series is directed by Sebastain Smith and produced by Lily Fletcher. Curious Films’ Dov Freedman and Charlie Russell serve as executive producers alongside ABC News Studios’ David Sloan and Claire Weinraub.

Curious Films is producing the project for ABC News Studios. The British production company has worked on several high-profile documentary projects, including Sky’s Boyzone: No Matter What, Disney+’s Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth, and Netflix titles such as A Toxic Love Story, Lover, Stalker, Killer and The Man with 1000 Kids.

With new interviews and access to people who were directly connected to the investigation, Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel will give viewers another look at a case that has remained in the public spotlight for more than a decade.

The four-part series premieres September 1 on Hulu.
