Idris Elba is returning to Netflix for a brand-new Luther movie, bringing back the dark, thrilling adventures of the detective fans have loved for years. The information comes from Netflix and the people involved in the project.

Ruth Wilson is also back as Alice Morgan. She didn’t appear in last year’s standalone movie, Luther: The Fallen Sun, but she’ll be part of this new story. Fans of the series, known as Lutherites, will be happy to see her return. Dermot Crowley, who has been a regular in the series, will also appear, reprising his role as police superintendent Schenk.

The movie is directed by Jamie Payne, who has worked on several episodes of the original series as well as the previous film.

The script is written by Neil Cross, the creator of Luther. According to the story, a new wave of brutal, random murders hits London, and Luther is quietly called back to work. But the big question is, how can he save the city when everyone seems to want him gone?

Payne shared his excitement about the project, saying, “Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”

Neil Cross also spoke about the return of the characters, saying, “Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family. I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”

The new feature is being produced by Chernin Entertainment, along with Cross, Elba, and Gina Carter through their 22Summers company, and Tim Lewis. Filming is set to begin in February.
