Industry Insider Reveals the Fate of ‘Armor Wars’: “Many of the Ideas Were Transferred to Other Projects”

‘Armor Wars’ is definitely one of the most “confusing” MCU projects. It has shifted between being a movie and a show and has faced long delays with little progress or updates.
It was originally envisioned as a film based on the comic storyline of the same name. It was intended to follow ‘Secret Invasion’ (which came out back in 2023) and ‘Ironheart’ (Set to be released next month). Back in 2011, Don Cheadle confirmed that a War Machine film was in the works and that Joe Robert Cole had been hired to write it.
Nine years later, during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, it was announced that ‘Armor Wars’ would be developed as a television series for Disney+, with Don Cheadle set to reprise his role as James Rhodes. In 2021, Cheadle also mentioned that production would begin in a few months.
Then the show was transformed into a movie yet again, with an uncertain production or release date. In fact, the last update that Cheadle gave us was “I don’t know.”
Now, industry insider Alex Perez revealed via his June AMA what could be in store for the character.
A fan asked if Armor Wars was definitely canceled or just likely to be. Alex Perez replied that many of the ideas planned for Armor Wars are now being used in other Marvel projects. One of the main ones is VisionQuest, which will focus on Ultron.
Another is Wonder Man, which will look into the Department of Damage Control (DODC) and their investigation of Simon Williams.
However, Alex said one part of Armor Wars might not get used at all. This is the story of Rhodey and how he deals with what happened in Secret Invasion, especially after it was revealed that he was replaced by a Skrull named Raava.
The original plan was to show when Rhodey was replaced. At first, Marvel thought about saying he was swapped as far back as Captain America: Civil War, but fans were very upset about that idea. So, Marvel decided to place it later, between Avengers: Endgame and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The show was also supposed to explore Tony Stark’s legacy. It would have looked at how his death affected the people close to him. There were even plans to bring back Pepper Potts and Tony’s daughter, Morgan Stark.
The last rumors we’ve heard regarding the project was that it’s going to be released after Secret Wars and that it’s being reworked due to extremely negative reception of Secret Invasion.
