The release of Ironheart is upon us, marking the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Serving as the final chapter of Phase Five, the series continues the story of Riri Williams while introducing a unique magical twist to her journey.

Dominique Thorne returns as Riri Williams, aka Ironheart, following her debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She stars alongside Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Manny Montana, Matthew Elam, and Anji White.

The series was first announced in December 2020, with Thorne’s casting confirmed at the time. In April 2021, Chinaka Hodge joined as head writer, and additional cast members were revealed in February 2022. Directors Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes came on board in April 2022.

Filming began in June 2022 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, before moving to Chicago in October. Production wrapped in early November.

The first reviews are in, and it’s just okay. The show is currently at 72% on Rotten Tomatoes when it comes to Critics and 72% approval rate when it comes to audiences.

The reviews are pretty mixed

The general consensus is that Ironheart is a solid and thoughtful show, but not a standout hit. People like how it explores Riri Williams’ character and blends magic with technology. The show has heart and touches on real emotions like grief and community.

Dominique Thorne gives a strong performance, and Lyric Ross also shines. However, some feel the show doesn’t fully use all of its cast, like Ramos. Overall, it’s a good show with meaning, but it falls short of being great.

When it comes to audience reviews, the show is allegedly being “review-bombed,” but at the moment of writing this piece, I can’t find evidence on Rotten Tomatoes to support this theory.

IMDb is a different beast entirely, as it’s clear from the overall score chart, something shifty is taking place:

IMDb

Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 58 out of 100 based on 18 critics, indicating “mixed or average”. When it comes to user score, the show currently sits at 3.3. meaning “Generally Unfavorable.”

The first three episodes of Ironheart are now streaming on Disney+.
