Is Deadpool Officially Confirmed for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’? Here’s What Actually Happened at D23

Marvel’s marketing machine has perfected the art of the almost-confirmation, dangling just enough information to send fans into a frenzy without ever fully committing to a yes or no. That strategy was on full display once again during this year’s D23 event, where one of the internet’s favorite antiheroes found himself at the center of the rumor mill yet again.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already assembled one of the largest ensembles in franchise history, pulling together heroes from across the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. Naturally, fans have spent months speculating about who else might squeeze into the roster before the film’s release.

That speculation reached new heights when Marvel opened the ‘Doomsday’ portion of its D23 panel with a surprise video message featuring Hugh Jackman, who made a direct pitch to join the film. “I’d love to join, and I might be able to convince Ryan to appear,” Jackman said in the clip, referring to his longtime collaborator Ryan Reynolds.

That’s when Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool character jumped in from off-screen, mockingly asking why Marvel would possibly need two more people in a movie that already has roughly twenty other heroes attached. Reports from inside the room even caught Deadpool telling Jackman to “follow the script,” turning the moment into pure comedic chaos rather than a straightforward confirmation.

Kevin Feige didn’t bite on stage, moving the panel forward without officially inviting either actor into the film, instead bringing out Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell to unveil new Doctor Doom footage. Still, the timing of the bit has plenty of fans convinced this wasn’t just a throwaway joke.

This wasn’t the first time the gag had played out in public, either. Weeks earlier, Reynolds had crashed Marvel’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con in person, appearing in a gray X-Force suit under the alias “Ricky” while begging for a spot in ‘Doomsday’, only to be told by Downey Jr. that the film was already locked.

Running the same joke across two of Marvel’s biggest promotional events within a matter of weeks feels less like coincidence and more like a calculated tease. Some outlets have already begun treating the video as unofficial confirmation that both Wolverine and Deadpool are secretly in the film, even though Marvel has yet to say so outright on stage.

There’s a clear financial logic behind fan excitement over the pairing. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, making it Marvel’s highest-earning R-rated release to date, and Reynolds has already confirmed a follow-up film is currently in development.

It’s also worth noting this isn’t the first time Jackman and Reynolds have played this exact game. The two have a well-documented history of publicly campaigning for each other’s involvement in Marvel projects, a running bit that dates back years and has become something of a signature move for the pair whenever a new MCU film is in the pipeline.

For now, Marvel’s official stance remains unchanged: nothing about Deadpool or Wolverine’s involvement in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been confirmed on record. But between the Comic-Con stunt and the D23 video, the studio seems to be building toward something, whether that’s an actual cameo or simply another elaborate piece of marketing theater.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and hits theaters on December 18, bringing together one of the largest superhero ensembles ever assembled for a single film.
