Is ‘Ted Lasso’ Already Plotting Another Season, and Is Apple Letting It Slip?

Nobody expected Coach Lasso to pick the whistle back up. The show finished its original three season run in 2023, and Jason Sudeikis had been clear that the story was over. Now the fourth season is heading toward a finale on October 7, and the conversation has already jumped to ‘Ted Lasso‘ Season 5.

So is another round of Richmond heartbreak and biscuits on the way? Apple TV has not officially renewed the series for a fifth season, but the trail of hints, reports and executive optimism is getting hard to ignore.

Will There Be a ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 5 Renewal

The short answer is not officially, at least not yet. Reports ahead of the fourth season confirmed that no renewal had been issued for a fifth. That said, the people with the most power to say yes keep sounding like they want to.

In a red carpet interview with ScreenRant, Apple’s Eddy Cue teased that a fifth season seems likely. He said he hoped so and called the show good enough for another run. He also suggested there are plenty of stories left to tell.

The business case looks strong too. The fourth season premiere drew nearly 300 million viewing minutes across its first two days, making it the biggest launch for Apple TV to date. Critics and audiences showed some early hesitancy, but the season has held a solid spot in Apple TV’s charts since it returned.

What We Know About the Season 5 Plan

Behind the scenes, the wheels seem to be turning already. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the creative team was expected to return to the writers room in late August to map out a not yet ordered fifth season. The same report noted that Sudeikis once again has a three season arc in mind.

That plan reshapes the whole franchise. The idea supports Sudeikis continuing the story from the fourth season through a sixth, giving the Lady Greyhounds a potential trilogy of their own. Reports say he would like to do a fifth and sixth season after the fourth.

It also fits the way Sudeikis talks about the show’s creative process. He explored spinoff ideas such as a Keeley Jones show, a Leslie Higgins cartoon and a Dani Rojas telenovela, before deciding it was more like adding a room to the bar. Many of those unused ideas are now feeding plans for future seasons.

Season 5 Release Date and Filming Rumors

If a renewal lands, the timeline could move quickly. Sigmund Judge reported that production on a fifth season is provisionally set to begin in January, with a return to screens as soon as next year. TechRadar noted that early development murmurs and the January filming report have both been cited by 9to5Mac and AppleInsider.

Not every outlet is quite so bullish on timing. TV Insider suggested a fifth season likely wouldn’t arrive until at least 2027 or 2028, depending on renewal and progress. History offers some context, since the first season debuted in August 2020, the second arrived just under a year later, and the third dropped in March 2023.

There is also a tempting real world tie in. One report floated that a summer release window could line up a women’s football storyline alongside the actual Women’s World Cup. That remains speculation for now, and nothing has been confirmed by Apple or the cast.

Who Could Return for Season 5

Cast stability is the other big question. The fourth season features Sudeikis alongside Brendan Hunt, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple and Brett Goldstein. Jeremy Swift is also among the returning faces.

Several familiar names have stepped away. Phil Dunster, Nick Mohammed, James Lance and Cristo Fernandez will not reprise their roles, and Anthony Head died two months before the season premiere. That makes the women’s team storyline feel like a natural centerpiece going forward.

Apple also seems to be planning for the long haul. Sudeikis recently said he’d like to see two more seasons, and Cue signed the cast to a three year contract in 2025. If the Lady Greyhounds keep winning over viewers, a full trilogy for Ted’s new chapter is starting to look less like wishful thinking and more like a plan in motion. Do you want Ted and the Lady Greyhounds to chase that full three season arc, or would you rather Richmond walk away while the underdog magic is still glowing?
