‘Lioness‘ has never been shy about putting its lead through the wringer, but season three has pushed that further than any previous run of the Paramount+ espionage drama. Zoe Saldaña’s Joe McNamara spends much of the season reeling from a targeted attack tied to a dangerous earlier mission, and the fallout only escalates from there.

The season also complicated its own timeline, jumping between past and present after revealing Joe had nearly been abducted months before the attack viewers initially saw play out. That structural twist drew some criticism online, with one commentator calling the choice one of the most confusing storytelling decisions he’d seen from a television series.

All of that turmoil has fed a specific rumor among fans: that Joe’s brutal season is building toward writing Saldaña out of the show entirely. That speculation isn’t supported by anything in the reporting around the season, and Saldaña remains very much the lead of ‘Lioness,’ both in front of the camera as Joe and behind it as an executive producer.

Season three found new ways to test that commitment on screen. In the show’s sixth episode, Joe is kidnapped and tortured to the point of losing a pinky toe, a moment that set social media ablaze as her team raced to find her before it was too late. Saldaña leaned into the intensity of the moment rather than shy away from it, and her presence has anchored the season from its premiere through its most harrowing stretches.

Saldaña’s commitment to ‘Lioness’ actually predates the current season by a wide margin. She has previously indicated she signed on for at least three seasons of the show, a contractual detail that pointed to a longer arc for Joe well before season three was even confirmed. Paramount+ later made that renewal official on its own, with production running from October 2025 through March 2026 ahead of the season’s August premiere.

Much of the exit chatter traces back to comments about Joe’s second in command rather than anything involving Saldaña herself. The season’s penultimate episode shows how far operative Cruz Manuelos, played by Laysla De Oliveira, has evolved under Joe’s mentorship, appearing ready to potentially step into a position of real authority within the Lioness program.

Speaking with MovieWeb, De Oliveira described Cruz as ready for that kind of responsibility, noting that Cruz’s arc has been heading in that direction all season. That comment reads as a hint about succession within the fictional program rather than any signal that Saldaña is preparing to leave the series.

Momentum around the show has only added fuel to the speculation. According to Variety, the season three premiere pulled 7.1 million viewers in its first seven days, a jump over where season two stood at a comparable point and enough to rank the episode among the most watched streaming originals in the country that week.

Those numbers have fed optimism about a fourth season even without an official announcement from Paramount+. Writer Michael Idov has already joined the series in a supervising producer role, a move that suggests planning for future episodes is already underway regardless of when a renewal becomes official.

Taken together, the evidence points toward an actress deeply invested in where Joe McNamara’s story goes next rather than one preparing to step away from it. What actually happens to Joe by the time the season three finale wraps remains the more pressing question for now.
