Jaafar Jackson’s Transformation Into His Uncle Michael Jackson Left Even His Own Family Speechless

Biopics live and die by how convincingly their lead actor can disappear into a role, and few transformations this year have generated as much buzz as the one currently making waves online. Casting a real family member to play a beloved icon always carries risk, since audiences immediately compare bloodline to performance rather than judging the work on its own terms.

That risk paid off in a big way for the Michael Jackson biopic simply titled ‘Michael,’ where Jaafar Jackson stars as his own uncle in his acting debut. The resemblance achieved on screen has become one of the film’s most talked about elements, with new behind-the-scenes images continuing to circulate and stun fans months after the movie’s release.

Much of that transformation comes down to the work of Oscar-winning makeup artist Bill Corso, who led the team responsible for recreating Michael Jackson’s ever-changing appearance across the decades depicted in the film.

Corso revealed that Jaafar’s character required roughly 30 distinct looks throughout the movie, each one demanding its own combination of makeup, hairstyling, and costume work to authentically capture a different era of Jackson’s evolving image.

Corso admitted that even he was occasionally caught off guard by just how convincing the transformation became, describing the process as full of small, meticulous details layered together look by look. That level of precision helped the production move fluidly between Jackson’s earliest years with the Jackson 5 and his later, more iconic solo eras without ever breaking the illusion for audiences.

Jaafar has been candid about how surreal the experience felt from his side of the mirror as well. Speaking on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,’ he described the first time he saw himself fully transformed as a genuinely spiritual moment, explaining that just that process of seeing me slowly transform into Michael, it was emotional, according to TheWrap.

Jaafar was not the only cast member undergoing a significant physical transformation for the film. Colman Domingo, who plays Jackson’s father Joe, spent up to three hours in the makeup chair each morning during the earlier stages of production, relying on prosthetics, hazel colored contact lenses, and a custom afro wig to recreate Joe Jackson’s distinctive look.

That transformation reportedly left an impression on Jaafar himself, who said there were moments watching Domingo in full makeup that genuinely felt like standing in front of his real grandfather. The production team built both transformations using historic photographs and archival family footage, aiming to avoid caricature in favor of something rooted in authenticity.

Jaafar’s own path to the role was far from a simple casting decision, either. He revealed that landing the part was a multi-year process that stretched well beyond a traditional audition, requiring him to prove himself worthy of the lead role even before officially learning he had gotten it. Having never acted before taking on the project, he worked with a dedicated acting coach to prepare for the challenge of carrying an entire film.

The physical resemblance achieved through Corso’s work has only added to the emotional weight fans have attached to the film, especially given that Jaafar is portraying a family member rather than a stranger. That personal connection appears to have shaped every part of his approach, from the demanding makeup sessions to the performance itself.

With ‘Michael’ continuing to dominate conversation online months after release, the transformation work behind the film remains one of its most enduring talking points. Corso’s team managed to do something genuinely rare in the biopic genre, creating a lead performance where the actor’s real-life connection to the subject only heightens rather than distracts from the illusion on screen.
