Jack Gleeson, the actor best known for his role as the cruel King Joffrey in Game of Thrones, has finally addressed rumors about why he stepped back from acting after the show. Speaking at the premiere of his new series, House of Guinness, Gleeson clarified that fan reactions to his character did not push him away from the industry.

Thankfully, it wasn’t because I received any sort of abuse from anybody. Thankfully! I know that can happen, sadly. People confuse the character (with the actor), but after Game of Thrones or even during the show, I was continuing to act, but it was more of just a theatre company that I set up with some friends in Dublin, and I was more into that at that time,” Gleeson told reporters.

While playing Joffrey, Gleeson became the target of intense reactions from fans who despised the sadistic king. He recalled that people often directed their anger at him personally, even though he was simply playing a role.

Despite the hostility, he emphasized that he never experienced any serious abuse. Instead, the intense fan responses helped him understand the powerful impact a character can have on audiences.

After Game of Thrones, Gleeson chose to focus on theater, forming a company in Dublin with friends. This allowed him to explore acting in a different environment away from the global spotlight of television. Yet his love for screen acting eventually drew him back, and he is now returning to television with House of Guinness.

Gleeson’s experience highlights the thin line actors face when portraying deeply hated characters. Fans can become so immersed in the story that they confuse fiction with reality, creating unexpected challenges for performers.

It’s great to see Gleeson returning to screen acting. He clearly has a deep passion for his craft and has navigated the pressures of global fame with care. It also reminds us how powerful storytelling can be, and how devoted, sometimes extreme, fan reactions can affect the people behind the characters.
