Jake T. Austin Breaks Silence on Being Cut from ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ Spinoff Despite Committing to Return

The ‘Wizards of Waverly Place‘ universe has been a source of both nostalgia and disappointment for longtime fans, especially as the beloved Disney Channel series has evolved through its spinoff chapter. When Disney Channel announced ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,’ viewers anticipated a reunion of the original cast, particularly the three Russo siblings who anchored the sitcom from 2007 to 2012.

However, the reception has been complicated, with several original cast members publicly discussing their absence from the spinoff’s story.

The gap between what fans expected and what actually appeared on screen has proven significant, with the series taking a different creative direction than many viewers hoped. While some original cast members returned for select appearances, others found themselves completely sidelined from the project.

The four-part series finale concluded on August 4, 2026, marking the end of ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,’ and in the days following the finale, those left out of the show have had time to reflect on their roles in its absence.

Jake T. Austin, who played the youngest Russo sibling Max across all 4 seasons of the original series, took to Instagram on August 6 to share his perspective on not being included in the spinoff.

Austin revealed that he had actively expressed interest in returning when the opportunity was first presented. “I was asked back in 2020 if I was interested in reprising my role and said that I was 100% in,” Austin wrote in his Instagram story. “Unfortunately, the powers that be decided to take the show in a different direction and my character wasn’t part of the equation.”

Austin emphasized that despite his disappointment, he harbors no ill will toward his former castmates or the show itself. “Even though I wasn’t involved, I still have nothing but love for my former castmates and wish them continued success,” he continued. “Thank you to all the fans who watched over the years. The show wouldn’t be what it is without your endless support.” His statement painted a picture of a performer who remained committed to the franchise but was ultimately excluded from its continuation.

Austin was not the only original cast member to vocalize concerns about the spinoff’s creative choices. According to The Wrap, David DeLuise, who played the Russo parents’ father Jerry, appeared in only a handful of episodes and commented on the missed opportunity. “It would not be over if the OG wizards were really there. Missed opportunity,” DeLuise wrote in response to the finale on Instagram. The show did manage to bring back Selena Gomez, Jennifer Stone, and Gregg Sulkin for the finale, though in limited capacities.

The 31-year-old actor, who had previously engaged with promotional materials for the spinoff and expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with his co-stars, never made a cameo or guest appearance throughout the show’s entire run. His complete absence stands in contrast to some other original cast members who at least received finale moments. The spinoff was led by David Henrie and Selena Gomez, both serving as executive producers on the series alongside its creative team.
