Jameela Jamil is responding after private text messages about Blake Lively became public and sparked criticism online. The messages appeared after court documents were unsealed in Blake Lively’s ongoing lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, according to reporting tied to the case. One of the documents included a text from August 2024 in which Jamil criticized Lively while discussing her behavior during a movie press tour.

In the text exchange with a publicist, Jamil referred to Lively as a “suicide bomber” and described her actions as a “bizarre villain act.” Once the messages surfaced, some media coverage questioned whether the comments conflicted with Jamil’s public image as a feminist.

Jamil addressed the backlash in a video posted to her Instagram account. She said the criticism misunderstands what feminism actually means. According to Jamil, feminism is about rights and equality, not about personal friendships or universal support between women.

“Guys, feminism means fighting for the political, social and economic equity for women,” Jamil said in the video. “It does not mean you have to like every single woman. It doesn’t mean you have to be friends with every single woman. It means you can actually beef with other women.”

She continued by saying that disagreement or conflict does not cancel out someone’s beliefs. Jamil explained that as long as someone supports equal opportunities and rights for women, they are still acting within feminist values.

Jamil also pushed back against the idea that feminism is about being socially aligned with everyone. “That’s all feminism is. It’s a moral and political stance. It is not a sleepover where we braid each other’s pubes, OK?” she said. She added that conflict is normal and does not erase someone’s principles.

The controversy is tied to Blake Lively’s lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, which includes claims of s***** harassment and retaliation. The case is currently moving forward, with a trial scheduled for May 2026, according to court records.

Outside of the legal discussion, Jamil continues to work steadily in entertainment. She recently appeared in the Netflix film People We Meet on Vacation and is widely known for her roles in The Good Place and She-Hulk. She also voiced a character in Pixar’s Elio, which received an Oscar nomination for best animated feature on January 22.

While Jamil argues that feminism allows room for criticism and disagreement, the language used in the private texts has remained the central focus of public reaction.
