James Cameron recently revealed both his favorite action movie and his pick for the greatest Christmas movie during an appearance on Stephen Colbert. The director didn’t hesitate when asked.

“No, I know the answer to this. It’s Die Hard. Right? Die Hard. It’s best one liner, best villain death, best Christmas movie,” Cameron said.

Since its release, Die Hard has been re-evaluated by critics and is now considered one of the greatest action films ever made.

Part of its success comes from its main character, John McClane, who is shown as vulnerable and fallible, a big change from the muscle-bound heroes common in action films of the 1980s. Critics have also discussed the movie’s themes, including revenge, masculinity, gender roles, and American worries about foreign threats.

The film is often called a Christmas movie because of its holiday setting. The story takes place during a company Christmas party, featuring decorations, music, and holiday cheer, even as the action unfolds. Fans and critics argue that the Christmas backdrop, combined with the story of McClane saving the day, makes it a holiday classic—even if it is not a traditional family film.

Die Hard’s mix of intense action and a festive environment has helped it gain a loyal following as both an action film and a Christmas favorite. Cameron’s comments show that even the director of Titanic and Avatar recognizes the movie’s unique status.
