In an older career retrospective with GQ, filmmaker James Cameron looked back at the casting process for Titanic and shared new details about how close Leonardo DiCaprio came to missing out on the role of Jack Dawson.

The 1997 film went on to become one of the most famous movies in history, but Cameron said the early audition process for DiCaprio was far from smooth.

Cameron explained that DiCaprio made a strong first impression when they met, even attracting attention from people across the office. According to Cameron, the actor “charmed everybody” during that initial meeting. Because of that, he was invited back to read opposite Kate Winslet, who had already been cast as Rose.

That second meeting is where things started to fall apart. Cameron said DiCaprio did not expect to audition in a formal way and was surprised when asked to read lines on camera. The director recalled DiCaprio questioning the process, saying he “didn’t read,” which led Cameron to briefly end the meeting and consider moving on.

Cameron described the moment clearly, saying, “He said, ‘You mean, I’m reading?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘Oh, I don’t read.’ I shook his hand and said, ‘Thanks for coming by.’”

The director also explained his reasoning for being strict during casting, pointing out how large and demanding the production would be. He said, “This is a giant movie that is going to take two years of my life… So, I’m not going to f— it up by making the wrong decision in casting. So, you’re going to read, or you’re not going to get the part.”

DiCaprio eventually agreed to do the screen test, although Cameron said the actor was still reluctant at first. Once the camera started rolling, however, his performance changed and helped secure his place in the film.

Titanic later became a global phenomenon and one of the highest-grossing films ever made. The story of Jack and Rose, played by DiCaprio and Winslet, went on to define both actors’ careers and remains one of the most recognized romances in modern cinema.
