James Gunn Already Has His Batman Picks for the DCU
James Gunn is already thinking about who will play Batman in the new DC Universe. In a recent chat with The Ringer-Verse, the DC Studios co-CEO revealed that he has specific actors in mind for the role, though he didn’t give away any names.
When asked about casting, Gunn said: “Do I have ideas about actors to play Batman? Absolutely, I do. I have guys I like. I have guys that are at the top of the list, just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman.”
“But let me tell you something, they aren’t David Corenswet, right? They didn’t get the job. People can guess, and maybe they’ll be right about certain things. I don’t know. I don’t know what you’re talking about specifically. [It’s] totally up in the air.”
Gunn explained that nothing is set in stone yet because casting someone as big as Batman would require screen tests. “We’d have to screen test, we’d have to do the whole thing. It’s unlikely that I’m going to hire someone that’s [like] Sylvester Stallone as Batman [where] we’re just hiring him.”
“It’s unlikely that Batman’s going to be one of those guys. But it’s possible! I know one actor in particular who’s a pretty big star that wants to be Batman. We’ve talked about it, but I’m not sure that’s the case.”
Alongside the casting search, the script for Batman’s DCU debut is still being worked on. Gunn shared an update without naming the writer. “The script isn’t done, I mean, we’ve got somebody writing a script, I think it’s really good. But it isn’t finished yet.”
Fans have thrown out a lot of names for who they’d like to see take over the cape and cowl. Alan Ritchson and Jensen Ackles are two favorites among fans. Ritchson has even admitted that Batman came up in a conversation with Gunn, but he doesn’t believe he’ll land the role.
“Words have been exchanged about Batman. But I strongly don’t think that Batman is in my future. I do think there is something in my future with DC. And I would like that to remain true,” he said in an interview.
With Gunn still shaping the DCU, fans are left guessing who might be chosen as the next Dark Knight. Whoever it is will have some huge shoes to fill.
