James Gunn and Peter Safran Could Lose Full Control of DC Studios if Paramount Buys Warner Bros. According to Reports
James Gunn and Peter Safran may not have complete control over DC Studios if Paramount Skydance buys Warner Bros, according to a report from Puck.
While the DC leaders have big plans for the DC Universe, Paramount could try to influence the direction of the superhero franchise after an acquisition.
Sources say that Paramount, now owned by David Ellison, is already thinking about projects it wants to make in the DCU. One of those is a new project from Weapons director Zach Cregger, which Paramount Pictures co-chair Josh Greenstein has reportedly discussed with him.
All signs point to the company potentially taking some control from Gunn and Safran if they are brought into the Paramount family.
When Gunn and Safran took over DC Studios, part of the appeal was the chance to shape an entire interconnected universe. This allowed them not only to work with famous heroes like Superman and Batman but also to explore lesser-known characters like Booster Gold and the Creature Commandos.
Any changes under Paramount Skydance are still hypothetical until a sale actually happens. Netflix has also expressed interest in buying Warner Bros, adding more uncertainty to the future of the DCU.
Paramount’s interest in Zach Cregger comes after the success of Weapons, which earned $268 million worldwide and was another big win for Warner Bros. Cregger is also attached to direct the next Resident Evil movie and a Weapons prequel film featuring the character Aunt Gladys. While Cregger hasn’t officially joined the DCU, he has shown interest in the universe.
He once wrote a horror script set in the DC world, though it didn’t include any superheroes. He later clarified that he hadn’t spoken to Gunn, but it confirmed his curiosity about working in the DC universe.
The future of DC Studios could look very different if Paramount Skydance takes over. Gunn and Safran have proven they can build a successful universe, but new ownership could bring big changes.
