James Gunn just gave fans the news they’ve been waiting for, it sounds like a Superman sequel is officially happening.

The update came straight from Gunn himself on Threads. When a fan asked what he was working on now that Superman promotion is done, Gunn replied, “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!” Another fan jumped in with, “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TEASE THE SEQUEL,” and Gunn shot back, “I JUST DID!”

While Gunn didn’t actually say “Superman 2,” fans are pretty sure that’s what he meant. After all, Superman has been doing great at the box office and has strong reviews from critics and audiences. It would be an odd time not to be thinking about a follow-up.

What makes this surprising is that Gunn had previously played down the idea of a straightforward sequel. On Threads before the movie came out, he responded to a question about Superman 2 with, “Define Superman 2.” At the time, it seemed like he was avoiding confirming anything. Now it looks like plans have changed, or maybe this was the plan all along.

The 2025 Superman film was a fresh start for the hero. Written and directed by Gunn, it’s the first film in the new DC Universe and stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and several other big names.

The story follows Superman as he deals with the fallout from intervening in an international crisis set up by Luthor, forcing him to win back the trust of the public.

Production on the film took Gunn all over the world, from Norway to Georgia, and it wrapped up in July 2024. When it premiered in July 2025, it quickly became a hit, grossing more than $500 million worldwide and earning praise for its fun, colorful tone and strong performances.

So while Gunn hasn’t spelled out the details yet, it’s pretty clear the Man of Steel will be flying back to the big screen for another adventure. And if Gunn’s own words are anything to go by, he’s already working on it.
