James Gunn is officially coming back for more Superman action. During a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call, CEO David Zaslav confirmed that Gunn will write and direct “the next installment in the Super-Family.” While Zaslav didn’t explain exactly what that means, it does confirm Gunn’s next big move after Superman.

Gunn had already teased that he was writing something new featuring David Corenswet’s Superman. He brought it up a few times during the Superman press tour but stayed vague about whether it was a direct sequel or a different kind of story. Zaslav didn’t clear that up either, choosing instead to call it the “next movie in the Super-Family.”

What we do know is that Gunn will once again be doing double duty—writing the script and directing the film, just like he did with Superman. That movie turned out to be a hit. As of August 5, 2025, it has made over $559 million around the world. It earned $320.3 million in the U.S. and Canada and another $239 million internationally.

The film has also done well with critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, 83% of the 471 critics’ reviews were positive. The site’s review summary says: “Pulling off the heroic feat of fleshing out a dynamic new world while putting its champion’s big, beating heart front and center, this Superman flies high as a Man of Tomorrow grounded in the here and now.” On Metacritic, it has a score of 68 out of 100, based on 58 critic reviews, showing a generally favorable response.

Many critics praised how fun and honest the film was. Performances by David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult also got a lot of love. Some thought the movie had too many characters and storylines, but overall, it was seen as a strong reboot.

Viewers seemed to like it too. CinemaScore gave it an A−, which is the same grade Man of Steel received back in 2013. PostTrak’s data showed that 86% of people gave the movie a positive score, and 74% said they’d definitely recommend it.

Recently, a fan asked Gunn on social media what he was working on now that Superman promotion had ended. He replied, “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!” Another fan followed up and asked, “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TEASE THE SEQUEL,” and Gunn responded quickly with, “I JUST DID!”

This all comes after months of Gunn avoiding any direct answers about a sequel. Before the movie came out, a fan asked him on Threads if Superman 2 was happening. Gunn answered, “Define Superman 2.” At the time, it seemed like he didn’t want to talk about it yet, or maybe he was just keeping the plan quiet.

Now it looks like the next chapter is moving forward. Whether it’s a true sequel or a new team-up movie is still unknown, but James Gunn is clearly not finished with Superman or the growing DC Universe.

The movie focusing on Supergirl, Superman’s cousin, is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on June 26, 2026, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira.
