James Gunn recently gave a surprising answer about the next Superman movie, and it has fans wondering what’s coming next for the DC Universe.

When asked about the release date for Superman 2 during a conversation on Threads, Gunn replied simply with, “Define ‘Superman 2.’” This short but mysterious answer made people think the sequel might not be a regular follow-up, but maybe something different—possibly a crossover involving other characters.

Before this, Gunn had hinted that the next Superman story would be “a little different than what one might expect.” This has led to rumors that instead of a traditional sequel focusing only on Superman, the next movie could include other heroes or be part of a bigger story.

Right now, the sequel is not officially confirmed. Gunn, who co-leads DC Studios, has said that no new projects will move forward until the script is finished. David Corenswet, who plays Superman, told Vanity Fair in a lie-detector test that he has already signed a contract for a sequel. But Gunn’s recent comment suggests the next movie might have more going on than just Superman’s story.

The only confirmed follow-up to Superman (2025) is Supergirl, set to release on June 26, 2026, starring Milly Alcock as the lead. After Gunn’s comment, some fans guessed that the next movie could feature both Superman and Supergirl, maybe fighting a villain like Brainiac. Others think there could be a “World’s Finest” film bringing Superman and Batman together.

In the post-credits scene of Superman, Mister Terrific and Superman talk about the damage Lex Luthor caused in Metropolis. This hints there’s still unfinished business. The movie also introduced new characters like The Engineer and touched on bigger ideas about Superman’s Kryptonian heritage and alien threats.

Gunn’s teasing fits with DC Studios’ goal to create a connected universe where the stories link up but don’t force people to watch everything. With characters like Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Jimmy Olsen already part of the story, the next movie could build on Superman’s world or connect to bigger DC Universe plans.

After Superman’s release, reports came out saying Gunn and Peter Safran are thinking about making spin-off shows about characters like Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen. There are also plans for David Corenswet’s Superman to appear alongside DCU versions of Batman and Wonder Woman in a future Justice League movie.

So far, no official release date for Superman 2 has been announced. But based on Gunn’s comments, it looks like the next chapter may be something new and different from what fans expect.
