James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, recently talked about the future of the DC Universe and gave fans a better idea of what to expect. In an interview, he shared how the new stories are being planned and how connected the different shows and movies will be.

The first chapter of the new DCU is called “Gods and Monsters.” Gunn explained that Superman plays a big part in this new beginning. He said some projects like Creature Commandos aren’t very central to the big story, but others are key. “Peacemaker and Superman are both pretty important in terms of getting to the bigger story,” Gunn said.

At the same time, he wants to make sure people don’t feel lost if they don’t watch everything. Right now, each project is designed so anyone can jump in and still understand what’s going on.

Gunn said, “I am really trying to be careful that anybody can dip in and see the story that is up next and not feel like they’re missing information.” But he also mentioned that things might change later on. As the story grows, the DCU could become more connected — like how Infinity War led into Endgame in the Marvel universe.

Still, for now, viewers won’t need to watch one DC movie or show to understand another. He gave the example of Supergirl and Superman. “ Oh, it is very important. I wouldn’t say Creature Commandos is important, but Peacemaker and Superman are both pretty important in terms of getting to the bigger story. At the same time, I am really trying to be careful that anybody can dip in and see the story that is up next and not feel like they’re missing information. The other stories can provide added texture to what you’re watching. That might change down the line as we get deeper into what’s happening in this universe. It could be like Infinity War and Endgame, where you kind of have to see Infinity War to know what’s going on in Endgame. Right now, you don’t have to see Superman to see Supergirl,” he explained. Gunn added that while some stories are linked, they’re also adding “Previously in the DCU” recaps before each episode to help people keep up.

He also talked about which superheroes are at the center of this new universe. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had said earlier that Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl are the main pillars.

Gunn confirmed that’s true, saying, “Yeah, I think that’s accurate, actually. I think that he got that from me.” But he also noted it’s not just about those four, even though they’re very important right now. “I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two,” he said.

When asked if they had cast Batman and Wonder Woman yet, Gunn said no. However, he mentioned that Robert Pattinson is still part of the plan. “We cast Robert Pattinson, so he is still there,” he said.

He also praised what filmmaker Matt Reeves is doing with the character. “What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary,” Gunn added, saying he’s looking forward to reading the next script.

So far, Gunn’s vision for the DCU seems focused, but also flexible. While Superman and Peacemaker will help shape the future of the franchise, fans won’t be required to watch everything to enjoy the ride. But as the story grows, things could start connecting more deeply, just like the big Marvel crossovers that came before.
