James Gunn Hints That Upcoming ‘Superman’ Sequel Will Feature a Team-Up Fans Did Not Expect

James Gunn has revealed new details about the upcoming Superman film, which is officially titled Man of Tomorrow and is set to release on July 9, 2027. The filmmaker confirmed that he has already written a script treatment and plans to begin production around April 2026.

According to reports, Gunn described the movie as part of the “Superman Saga,” and it will feature Superman in a major role, but it will not be a direct sequel to the 2025 film. Both Rachel Brosnahan and Odessa Corenswet are expected to return, along with Nicholas Hoult.

In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Gunn gave fans a hint about the story. “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” he said.

This is significant, as fans have not often seen the two iconic characters join forces. Past DC storylines have explored similar partnerships, such as during the Forever Evil event in the New 52 comics.

In that story, Lex Luthor led remaining villains and surviving heroes to fight back against the Crime Syndicate from a parallel Earth. Superman worked alongside Luthor to stop the Syndicate, highlighting moments when the two enemies put aside their differences to face a larger threat.

Comic fans will recall other instances where Superman and Luthor teamed up. In post-1980s storylines, Luthor once brought Superman from Earth-One to help stop General Zod and other Kryptonians, ultimately sacrificing himself in the process.

These stories often show that, despite their rivalry, Luthor and Superman occasionally put aside their differences to save the world. Gunn’s upcoming film appears to draw inspiration from these moments, exploring the tension and uneasy cooperation between the two characters.
