James Gunn Just Pumped the Brakes on a ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Trailer Before December

Every year, DC fans seem to pick up a new holiday ritual: refreshing their feeds in December and hoping a teaser lands under the tree. This time the object of that hope is the ‘Man of Tomorrow‘ trailer, with the film still months from its July 9, 2027 release date. The speculation has been building for weeks.

The pattern behind the hype isn’t imaginary. The first trailer for ‘Superman’ arrived online in December 2024, roughly seven months before the movie reached theaters. ‘Supergirl’ followed the same playbook, with its first trailer premiering on December 11, 2025. ‘Man of Tomorrow’ sits on the exact same runway, so fans assumed history would repeat itself.

Gunn has now stepped in to cool that assumption. After a Threads user accused him of hating it when fans get hyped, the DC Studios co-CEO pushed back. He said it’s really about not wanting people to be disappointed when no trailer shows up in December. It’s a blunt message, and it lands right as the rumor mill was warming up.

The expectation wasn’t built on vibes alone. In late August, a trailer and runtime leaker claimed that ‘Man of Tomorrow’ would follow its predecessors by dropping a teaser in December. Some outlets also floated the idea that the footage could play in front of ‘Dune: Part Three’, which opens on December 18.

Production timing didn’t give fans any reason to doubt it either. Gunn announced on August 26 that filming had wrapped after roughly 93 days. The lack of a trailer isn’t a sign the movie is running behind, which makes the silence feel more like a creative choice than a problem.

This latest Threads reply fits a pattern from the last few months. In July, rumors swirled that the first trailer had been shown at the CineEurope convention. Gunn shut that down quickly, clarifying that attendees saw only a short behind-the-scenes clip and not a trailer.

Then came the ‘Clayface’ premiere in mid-October. Asked whether a ‘Man of Tomorrow’ sneak peek was coming anytime soon, Gunn simply answered “No” and walked away laughing. That exchange left the door open a crack, but his newest comment seems to close it.

Taken together, the messaging has been consistent. Gunn isn’t teasing a surprise or playing coy. He appears to be deliberately lowering the temperature so nobody feels let down when the calendar flips.

The stakes around the first footage are high. The film is DC Studios’ chance to bounce back after the struggles ‘Supergirl’ faced earlier this summer, according to reporting on the film’s marketing outlook. Gunn is both writer-director and co-CEO of the studio alongside Peter Safran, so the movie carries more weight than a typical sequel.

There’s also plenty to protect. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are returning as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, and Gunn has confirmed that the two will be forced to team up against a common threat. Keeping that story under wraps for a little longer could make the eventual reveal hit harder.

Some outlets had already guessed that nothing would surface before the new year began, so Gunn’s comment may simply confirm what the more cautious observers expected. Still, it stings for anyone who wanted a holiday-season look at Superman’s next chapter. The upside is that a studio chief who tells fans the truth up front is easier to trust than one who lets a rumor run wild.

For now, the best advice is to treat any December trailer chatter with healthy skepticism. If first footage does arrive early next year, it will come with the full weight of a film that has had months to polish its marketing.

Do you agree with James Gunn’s decision to temper expectations for a December Man of Tomorrow trailer?
