James Gunn has made a small but important change to one of the DCU’s upcoming movies. The new Supergirl film, starring Milly Alcock, has officially dropped its original title. It was first known as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but now it’ll be called simply Supergirl.

Gunn talked about the change during an interview with Rolling Stone. The original title came from the comic series written by Tom King, who’s also helping shape the new DC Universe. While the movie is still inspired by that comic, Gunn has decided the name doesn’t need the extra words anymore.

When asked directly if the title had changed, Gunn said, “I think it’s just called Supergirl.”

This move follows a similar decision Gunn made with his Superman movie. It was originally titled Superman: Legacy, but that also got shortened to just Superman. Gunn explained the reason behind it, saying he’s tired of superhero movie titles using the format “Name: Subtitle.”

He also shared some insight into how he and his team go over decisions like this before a film starts shooting.

He explained how they do something called a “premortem,” which is basically a meeting where everyone imagines the project is going to fail, and they try to figure out what could cause that. “It’s usually about a couple months before shooting, and you go, hypothetically, ‘If it’s an epic disaster, what are the things that we’re doing today that are going to cause it to be an epic disaster?’” he said.

About the original Legacy subtitle for Superman, Gunn added, “Even though I was the one that gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure. First of all, I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing. And then also it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward.” After discussing it with his team, he said they all agreed that dropping it was the right move.

The film was first planned back in 2018 as part of the old DCEU, and Supergirl appeared in The Flash (2023), played by Sasha Calle. But when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in 2022, they changed plans.

In 2023, they announced a new version of the movie called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on a comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira was hired to write the script in late 2023, and Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl in early 2024. Craig Gillespie joined as the director in May 2024.

The movie stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. It follows Supergirl as she travels across the galaxy on a murderous quest for revenge.

Filming took place from January to May 2025 in England and Scotland. By June 2025, the title was shortened to just Supergirl.

The movie will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026, and will be part of the new DCU’s first chapter called Gods and Monsters.

So now, both Superman and Supergirl are keeping it simple with their titles. No extras. Just the hero’s name.
