James Gunn’s Superman movie has just hit theaters, but fans are already curious about what’s coming next in his new DC Universe. The next chapter is Peacemaker Season 2, and according to Gunn himself, it’s going to be more important than people expect.

In a chat with Screenrant, Gunn talked about what’s ahead. He was asked about Krypto, the superdog from Superman. The interviewer wondered if Krypto might secretly be the emotional center of Gunn’s DCU, similar to how Rocket turned out to be the heart of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Gunn said that’s not the case but left fans with a mysterious clue instead. “Yeah, I don’t think it’s Krypto’s story. I think I know whose story it is, and it probably isn’t anyone anyone would ever expect.”

He also confirmed that something big is coming. “Yeah, and it’s not what anyone thinks. It’s not what anyone would guess. But I think if people watch the next season of Peacemaker, they’ll see where a lot of these things are going and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen.”

These comments got fans talking online. A lot of people now think the multiverse could play a role. That theory grew stronger after the leaked Peacemaker Season 2 trailer showed John Cena’s Peacemaker mentioning a different dimension, one that he said is “way better” than his own.

Gunn has already said that both seasons of Peacemaker are official parts of his DC Universe, even though the Justice League cameo from Season 1 doesn’t fit neatly with the rest of the DCU. Gunn said that particular moment will get explained in the new season.

Fans are also wondering who the mysterious character is that Gunn hinted about. It’s not Peacemaker, even though John Cena’s character will officially be part of the new DCU timeline.

One of the top guesses is Rick Flag Sr. That character has shown up in both of the DCU’s first two projects, Creature Commandos and Superman. In Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. had a big role, while in Superman, his part was smaller. He will also return in a major way for Peacemaker Season 2. Frank Grillo, who plays him, has teased that Rick Flag Sr. could become like the DCU’s version of Nick Fury, working behind the scenes.

As for the new season itself, it will follow Peacemaker, the anti-hero mercenary Christopher Smith, and continue his story. The show started as a spin-off from The Suicide Squad movie, but now it’s officially part of Gunn’s DCU. Gunn wrote and directed all eight episodes. Alongside Cena, the cast includes Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Robert Patrick, Frank Grillo, Sol Rodríguez, David Denman, Tim Meadows, and Michael Rooker.

The second season took longer to make than planned. Filming was supposed to start back in 2023. But Gunn’s promotion to co-CEO of DC Studios and his work on the Superman movie delayed production. At first, Gunn focused on the Waller series, but Hollywood strikes pushed that project back, so Gunn decided to move forward with Peacemaker instead. Filming started in June 2024 and ended in November, with much of the shoot happening at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, alongside work on Superman.

Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. According to Gunn, fans will need to watch it to start understanding where the DCU story is really going, and who the unexpected main character of it all might be.
