James Gunn Reveals What’s Next for ‘Superman’ Sequel
James Gunn is already looking ahead to the next big Superman movie. After the huge success of the 2025 film, the director has confirmed that a sequel is in the works, and this time it sounds like the story will be bigger than just Superman on his own.
The first movie marked the start of the brand-new DC Universe and gave fans a fresh take on the Man of Steel. It starred David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The plot focused on Superman stepping into a global conflict created by Luthor. While he stopped the threat, his actions left many questioning whether they could still trust him. The mix of classic Superman themes with a modern twist struck a chord with audiences, and the film turned into both a critical and commercial hit.
That early success left fans wondering when a sequel would happen, and now Gunn has given some answers. In an interview with Deadline (reported by The Playlist), Gunn revealed that the treatment for the second film is already finished. He also hinted that it won’t just focus on Superman alone. “It’s within the group of characters we’ve already met, and Superman’s an important element of it. So, that’s what I’ll say, but like that movie, that treatment is done,” Gunn explained.
This comment suggests that the follow-up will feel more like a team-up movie rather than a solo outing. It also lines up with earlier comments from Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav, who described the next installment as part of a larger “Super-Family” franchise. With a Supergirl solo movie already planned for release next year, it wouldn’t be surprising if she plays a major role in the story.
Gunn previously confirmed he is already writing the sequel:

At the moment, no official details about the characters or plot have been confirmed. Still, the fact that the outline is done shows the project is moving forward quickly. Since the new DC Universe is still taking shape, this sequel could be an important step in connecting Superman with other heroes.
The first movie already introduced several characters tied to Clark Kent’s world, and Gunn’s plans for the DCU include other big names like Supergirl and members of the Justice League. With all of that in motion, the sequel could end up being a key piece that brings everything together.
For now, fans will have to wait for more news. But with the Supergirl movie on the horizon and Gunn confirming that the Superman sequel is in development, the future of the DC Universe looks like it will continue to revolve around its most iconic hero.
