James Gunn Says Rewriting ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 After Justice League Retcon Would Be Too Costly But He Would Love to Do It
James Gunn has confirmed that rewriting Peacemaker Season 1 after the Justice League retcon would be far too expensive and complicated. Speaking to TV Insider, Gunn explained that making changes to the first season would require altering too many scenes and reshooting large portions, something he simply couldn’t justify financially.
“I would have to change too many things throughout Season 1, it would cost too much money, and I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots in Supergirl,” Gunn said.
He emphasized that while fans can still enjoy Season 1, the official canon starts with Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2. “We say canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I love for people to watch Season 1, but obviously… we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of it… at least not at this point,” he added.
Gunn also joked about the possibility of a more extensive overhaul in the future, noting, “At some point, I would love to Lucas the s**t out of it, but right now I don’t have the money.”
The comments come as Season 2 of Peacemaker opens with an alternate dimension twist. Chris Smith, played by John Cena, discovers a portal in his late father Auggie’s house that leads to a world where his father and brother Keith are still alive.
Gunn explained that the new season isn’t just about chaos or multiverse fun. “This is not about the craziness, this is about Christopher Smith confronting the loss of the thing he never had, which is a brother, an adult that he could grow old with, and a father who loves him… and seeing what life would be like,” Gunn said.
This storyline allows Peacemaker to explore deeper emotional territory while still maintaining the show’s trademark humor and outrageous moments.
While the alternate dimension plotline is central to Season 2, Gunn reiterated that the show’s continuity and canon are firmly set in the newer DC universe.
The Season 1 retcon, including the replacement of the Snyderverse Justice League with the Justice Gang, is acknowledged in the recap, but Gunn has no plans to reshoot or heavily modify past episodes.
Instead, he focuses on using the budget to enhance the current season with additional visual effects and storytelling elements. “We kind of shifted the balance a bit because someone has got to be the good guy against the bad guy; that’s the way that stories are told,” he explained.
Gunn’s statements make it clear that while Peacemaker Season 2 embraces changes to the wider DC continuity, the practical and financial realities prevent a full-scale rewriting of Season 1.
Fans can expect the new season to expand on the story, explore deeper emotional stakes, and continue to push the series’ mix of comedy, action, and drama.
