James Gunn Says Supergirl Can Now Be as Flawed as the Guys: “Like Male Superheroes Have Been for a While”
The first trailer for the new Supergirl movie arrived today, giving fans their first real look at this new version of Kara Zor-El. The footage was shown earlier at a hotel event in New York and then released online.
In this movie, Supergirl is not the calm, polished hero people usually expect. She is shown as a young woman in her early twenties who jumps from planet to planet, party lifestyle included.
The trailer shows her spiraling after a lonely birthday and then getting pulled into a dangerous mission. She decides to help an alien girl named Ruthye and soon realizes she is dealing with much bigger problems than she expected. The script, written by Ana Nogueira and based on the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, dives straight into the messy side of the character.

Director Craig Gillespie told the New York audience that this version of Supergirl is nothing like classic Superman stories. He said, “This is really an anti-hero story. She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life.”
James Gunn, who runs DC Studios with Peter Safran, added that he likes that this movie lets Supergirl be flawed. He said, “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all.” After a pause, he added, “Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”
The trailer also shows Supergirl speaking very directly. At one moment she says that Superman “sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth.”
Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter he feels much more confident about DC’s future than he did before. When asked if he feels the studio is in a better place, he said, “Oh, yeah,” with no hesitation. Safran also said the franchise is in a stronger position than it was even a few months ago.
