James Gunn Sends Clear Message to DC Fans About How to Ask for What They Want
James Gunn has offered some guidance to DC fans on how to share their ideas about future projects.
He posted a message telling people to speak from their own point of view instead of acting like they speak for the whole fanbase. Gunn said, “If you want to see something from a filmmaker, consider phrasing it as ‘I’ as opposed to ‘we’… Your personal desire is meaningful and has weight, but when you frame your personal desire as a universal one, it rings false and becomes forgettable. Own what you want!”

His comment comes after many fans asked about the style of Batman’s suit they want to see in upcoming DC movies. Gunn has talked before about the requests he gets, and he mentioned that one design always comes up. According to him, the blue-and-grey version of the Batsuit is the most commonly asked for.
Still, he explained that fan opinions are far from unified. He said the requests are split, even for the style people say they want most. Gunn explained that some fans push for blue and grey, while just as many say they don’t want it at all.
He also noted that other popular asks, including different details of the suit, are equally divided. Because of that, he said the final choice has to be based on what makes sense for the movie and the story. Gunn stated that the writing, the character, and the actor matter far more than the suit colors.
Gunn’s message also highlights something common in big fandoms. Fans often speak as if everyone agrees with their opinion, and sometimes these demands can sound harsh or entitled. By pointing out the difference between “I want” and “we want,” Gunn is reminding the community to keep discussions respectful and honest about whose view is being shared.
