James Gunn Shares Bad News About Major DCU Project, Leaving Its Future Uncertain

The DCU has many projects on the way. Superman is already out and it’s doing great at the box office while getting strong reviews from critics and fans. Next year, fans can expect the Supergirl movie, with Milly Alcock playing Supergirl and Jason Momoa appearing as Lobo.

After that, there are more projects planned like Wonder Woman, Batman, and Teen Titans. DC Studios is also working on movies focused on Swamp Thing, Sgt. Rock, Clayface, and even Bane and Deathstroke. There’s also talk about a new Justice League movie in the future.

But among all these exciting updates, there’s one project that seems to be fading from the conversation: The Authority.

The Authority movie was originally announced back in January 2023 when James Gunn and Peter Safran shared their first big plan for the DCU. This movie was supposed to introduce a superhero team that originally came from WildStorm comics, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch.

DC Comics later brought those characters into their main universe. Gunn planned to include these WildStorm heroes in the DCU too, starting with The Authority film, which he once called a personal project. At that time, he was helping work on the outline of the movie with other writers at DC Studios.

However, things changed. In February 2025, Gunn admitted that The Authority was a really big movie and the script had been giving them trouble. Because of that, other projects started to take priority.

Now, there’s been another update, and it’s not a good one. In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Gunn gave a disappointing update about the movie’s future. He was asked what’s happening with The Authority, and Gunn explained that the writer working on the movie had been moved to another project in the DCU.

“The writer moved on to another movie in the DCU that I think he’s really killing at right now.”

This update makes it clear that The Authority is no longer a priority. Since its writer was taken off the project, it’s unclear when or if the movie will be made.

When Gunn first introduced the idea of The Authority, he explained that this team of heroes believes the world is completely broken and that the only way to fix it is to take matters into their own hands.

He described them as characters who are ready to do anything necessary to make the world better, whether that means “killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments, you know, whatever they want to do to make the world better.” Peter Safran compared the team to Jack Nicholson’s character in the movie A Few Good Men, saying they are morally complicated characters.

Even though the movie might not be happening soon, one member of The Authority has already appeared in the DCU. In the Superman movie, María Gabriela de Faría played Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer. In the film, she works as an ally to Lex Luthor and uses nanotechnology in her body, giving her unique powers and a tough attitude. Since she’s part of The Authority in the comics, her appearance could be seen as the first step in introducing the whole team.

For now, though, it looks like The Authority won’t be joining the DCU as a full team any time soon.
