The last time we saw major DCEU heroes on the big screen was with Ezra Miller’s Flash in the 2023 movie The Flash and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom did pretty well at the box office and became the biggest hit since the first Aquaman film, The Flash was a total flop. Critics didn’t like it, and fans were turned off by the controversies surrounding Ezra Miller.

By then, we already knew the DCEU was about to get rebooted into the new DC Universe (DCU), and fans have been excited to see Superman kickstart this fresh start. The new Superman movie recently launched the live-action part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU plans.

But if you’re hoping to see Flash and Aquaman back in the new DCU soon, you might want to be patient. James Gunn shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that we shouldn’t expect to see those characters again for at least the next two years. “I wouldn’t say the next two years for either of those characters,” Gunn said.

This news isn’t too shocking since both characters come with some baggage. Their solo movies only came out a couple of years ago and are still closely tied to the old DCEU. So it makes sense that Gunn and Safran want to take some time before bringing them into the new universe.

Also, Jason Momoa has a new role in the DCU, he will be debut as Lobo next year so Aquaman return is out of the question.

Despite this, the future of the DCU still looks exciting. The new Superman movie has been smashing box office records and getting great reviews. Next up is Peacemaker Season 2, which Gunn confirmed will be a direct follow-up to the Superman film. He also mentioned it will have an R-rating, promising something a little different and edgier.

Looking further ahead, we can expect a Supergirl movie in 2026 starring Milly Alcock. Beyond that, plans for a new Wonder Woman film and a Batman movie called The Brave and the Bold are already in motion. Gunn recently shared that if the scripts for those projects turn out well, production will move forward quickly.

So while Flash and Aquaman fans might have to wait a bit longer, there’s plenty to look forward to in the DCU’s future. With new stories, new characters, and fresh takes on classic heroes, James Gunn and Peter Safran seem ready to build something big, just on their own timeline.
