James Gunn is wasting no time planning what’s next for Superman after the hero’s latest movie smashed the box office. Released only weeks ago, Superman became both a commercial and critical hit. The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, along with a large cast of other DC characters.

In this story, Superman steps into an international crisis created by billionaire villain Lex Luthor. His actions spark backlash from the public, forcing him to win back trust with the help of Lois and other heroes.

The movie isn’t an origin tale, but it sets up a DC Universe that’s already full of magic, monsters, high-tech gadgets, and other superheroes.

Even before Superman hit theaters, Gunn was already talking about more stories. Back in June 2025, he revealed he had started writing a new Superman project. He explained it wouldn’t be a direct sequel but would still put Superman in a major role. Corenswet and Brosnahan were signed for possible sequels, but Warner Bros. wasn’t expected to announce one right away.

That changed in August when Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed Gunn would write and direct the next “Super-Family” film. Gunn later said he had completed a detailed script treatment for it. He called it “the next story in the Superman Saga” and said production could start sooner than people think.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Peacemaker Season 2 premiere in New York, Gunn gave another update. “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”

But movies aren’t the only thing Gunn has in mind. In July 2025, reports surfaced that he was thinking about spin-off shows based on supporting characters from Superman. Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific and Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen were two names mentioned. Journalist Jeff Sneider even said that Gisondo is expected to star in a Jimmy Olsen series for HBO Max. That series could also bring in Gorilla Grodd, the psychic gorilla villain from DC Comics, marking his debut in Gunn’s DCU.

For now, Superman’s success has cemented its place in the new DC Universe Gunn is building. With more stories already written, possible spin-offs on the way, and Superman still fresh in theaters, it’s clear that this is just the start of the “Superman Saga.” Fans can expect Clark Kent to keep flying high for years to come.
