Few casting mysteries in the DCU have burned as long as Adria Arjona’s role in ‘Man of Tomorrow’. For months fans have debated whether the ‘Andor’ star is playing Wonder Woman, Maxima or something else entirely, and every social media post gets scrutinized.

The mystery started when The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that, after several rounds of screen tests, Arjona had been chosen for a mystery role in the ‘Superman’ sequel. The outlet noted it was previously reported the character was Maxima, but said it was unknown if that was correct.

On October 4, the speculation reignited. Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr., shared a fan-made ‘Man of Tomorrow’ poster on his Instagram Story that featured most of the known cast, including Arjona as Wonder Woman, and Gunn quickly stepped in to set the record straight.

Gunn took to Threads and joked that Grillo reposted the image simply because his own photo was in it and he loves himself. He assured fans that Grillo doesn’t know who Arjona is playing in the DCU, or whether she has an incredibly small cameo in the film.

Gunn also felt people have been making far too much of the post. Notably, he neither confirmed nor denied the Wonder Woman theory.

The DCU boss also shared a private text exchange with Grillo. In it, Gunn told the actor he was killing him by posting Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle stuff, and that he’d disappoint people so badly.

Grillo apologized, saying he saw the cool poster about five times so he reposted it, and that he honestly doesn’t know what’s what. He promised to stop posting. Gunn said the exchange let him address the situation in a beneficial way and have some fun at Frank’s expense.

Arjona’s casting was later confirmed at CinemaCon, but the character was not. Trades reported she would play Maxima, the alien queen known in the comics for her obsession with Superman, though Gunn stressed he was absolutely not confirming that. He also called an earlier Deadline report inaccurate within an hour of its publication, and said that every major role had already been announced.

The Wonder Woman theory has stuck around anyway. Gunn has previously said Arjona would be a great Wonder Woman, and that fans overreacted to him following her on Instagram. Arjona has also been careful. When asked about Wonder Woman, she didn’t confirm or deny anything, but called Gunn and Peter Safran family and said she’s happy to be part of the DCU.

Her boyfriend, Jason Momoa, added fuel when he said Wonder Woman would be a great meeting for his Lobo, then playfully teased that Arjona would be good in the role. When Josh Horowitz asked her point-blank whether she was Wonder Woman or Maxima, Arjona laughed and joked that Safran and Gunn would kill her for answering.

The film, set for release in July 2027, follows Superman and Lex Luthor as they team up against Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. David Corenswet returns as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with Aaron Pierre joining as John Stewart. It’s also reportedly done filming.

As ComicBook.com pointed out, Arjona could still be playing Wonder Woman, but if she is, Grillo doesn’t know about it. Until Gunn or Warner Bros. says more, the only sure thing is that the speculation isn’t going anywhere.
