James Gunn Shuts Down Rumors Regarding Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the DCU (Again)
James Gunn has once again shut down the rumors that Robert Pattinson’s Batman is joining the DCU. People have been speculating about this for a while, especially after some confusion online, but Gunn made it clear it’s not happening.
Speaking recently, the DC Studios co-head and director of the upcoming Superman movie said, “I’ve said it before. We’ve talked about it before, but it’s not what’s happening right now. Listen, everything is in flux so we will figure out what we’re doing next yeah.” That last part only added more fuel to the conversation.
The rumors started heating up again after The Hollywood Reporter posted an update. They said the script for The Batman 2 is finished, which was exciting news. But they also added something that got fans curious.
They wrote, “But you can ask Gunn who’s writing The Brave and the Bold movie because we aren’t convinced there is one.” That one sentence sparked a lot of chatter about whether The Brave and the Bold is actually moving forward or not.
That movie was supposed to be a big deal for the new DC Universe. It was announced with Andy Muschietti as the director, and it would have introduced Bruce Wayne’s son Damian, inspired by the comic story by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert. But since then, things have been quiet.
There’s been talk of a writer working on the script, but no real updates have come out. Now, fans are starting to wonder if the movie is being delayed or even scrapped.
Meanwhile, The Batman 2 is still happening and has a clear path forward. Matt Reeves is back to direct, Robert Pattinson is returning as Batman, and Mattson Tomlin is helping with the script. The first version of the title was The Batman – Part II, but that’s no longer being used.
Filming is set to start in late 2025, and the movie is supposed to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. We’ll also see some familiar characters return like Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
There’s been a lot of confusion about how all these different Batman stories fit together, especially now that James Gunn and Peter Safran are running DC Studios. Gunn has said before that Reeves’ Batman films are separate from the main DC Universe. He called them “Elseworlds” stories. That means they don’t connect to Superman or any other upcoming DCU films.
Gunn has also made it clear he respects Reeves’ work, even if their styles are completely different. “When it’s somebody who’s important, like Matt Reeves… then you have to stand up and listen,” Gunn said in an earlier interview.
Reeves’ version of Batman is dark, grounded, and more focused on detective work. Gunn’s DCU is shaping up to be much more comic book-style and full of larger-than-life ideas. Trying to combine those two visions wouldn’t make much sense.
Right now, it feels like only one Batman story is moving forward with confidence—and that’s the one led by Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson. The Brave and the Bold might still exist, but there’s little to show for it right now. Until James Gunn gives a solid update, fans are left waiting and guessing whether we’ll ever see that version of Batman on screen.
