Jamie Campbell Bower Reveals His ‘Rings of Power’ Character in a New Look, and It’s a Huge Departure from Vecna

Jamie Campbell Bower has spent the past several years perfecting the art of playing terrifying villains, most memorably as the mind-flaying, reality-warping Vecna in ‘Stranger Things.’ That reputation made his casting in one of streaming’s biggest fantasy epics feel like a natural fit for another dose of villainy, right up until the actual details finally came out.

Bower’s involvement in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3 was confirmed back in 2025, but the specifics of his character remained locked away for months, fueling constant fan speculation about who exactly he’d be playing in Prime Video’s sprawling Tolkien adaptation. That mystery finally came to an end this week.

Empire has confirmed that Bower will play Celeborn, the Elf lord, warrior, and long-missing husband of Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel, marking his first major heroic turn after years of villain roles. The character previously appeared only briefly in Peter Jackson’s original film trilogy, portrayed by Marton Csokas, giving Bower plenty of room to build something entirely his own for the series.

Bower didn’t shy away from describing just how different this role is from what fans are used to seeing him play. Speaking in an interview with Empire, the actor described his version of Celeborn as “a ‘lover-boy,'” a stark departure from the calculated menace he brought to Vecna across two seasons of ‘Stranger Things.’

That romantic framing runs deep throughout Bower’s approach to the character, with the actor revealing that he drew heavily from J.R.R. Tolkien’s own real-life marriage to shape Celeborn’s emotional core. He described leaning into the idea of longing and separation, crafting a version of the character defined by years spent yearning for a love he’d been apart from for far too long.

Co-star Morfydd Clark echoed that sentiment, noting that Galadriel is written as notably standoffish toward Celeborn in Tolkien’s source material given her royal status, while still praising how naturally Bower embodies the physicality and presence fans would expect from an Elf of his stature. Showrunner J.D. Payne also weighed in on the casting, pointing to the rich, commanding quality of Bower’s voice as a major factor in landing the role.

The reveal arrived alongside a broader wave of Season 3 casting news out of San Diego Comic-Con, where Prime Video also confirmed Simon Pegg would voice the Balrog and unveiled a first look at Daniel Weyman fully stepping into the role of Gandalf. Additional new cast members joining the season include Eddie Marsan as Thráin, Andrew Richardson as Anárion, and Zubin Varla as Khamûl the Easterling, rounding out an ensemble tasked with carrying the show deeper into the War of the Elves and Sauron.

According to the show’s official synopsis, Season 3 jumps forward several years from the events of Season 2, thrusting its characters directly into the height of that escalating conflict as Sauron continues working toward forging the One Ring. Celeborn’s arrival adds an entirely new emotional thread to that unfolding war, giving Galadriel a deeply personal stake beyond the battles still to come.

With ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3 set to premiere on Prime Video on November 11, fans finally have a clear picture of what Bower’s presence will bring to the series. Trading Vecna’s menace for Celeborn’s devotion marks one of the more surprising pivots of his career, and it’s already generating plenty of excitement heading into the new season.
