During the filming of Poetic Justice in 1992, Janet Jackson reportedly asked Tupac Shakur to take an AIDS test before filming a kissing scene, according to an excerpt from Jeff Pearlman’s book Only God Can Judge Me: The Many Lives of Tupac Shakur.

At the time, Tupac was fresh off his breakout role in Juice, while Jackson was already a global superstar.

The two stars had a complicated dynamic on set, with differences in status, pay, and experience creating tension.

Pearlman writes that Jackson wanted to be sure Tupac was healthy before filming an intimate scene. She reportedly told assistant director Steve Nicolaides, “You know, Tupac’s reputation is that he’s a cat about town. And I don’t want to swap saliva with him until I’m really sure that he’s healthy and clean.”

Nicolaides confronted Tupac with Jackson’s request. “I’ll just spit this out to you, man. Janet wants you to have an AIDS test before you kiss her,” he said. Tupac’s response was immediate and defiant. “You kidding?” he asked, and when told it was true, he replied, “F*** her. I ain’t doing s*** for that bi***. Tell her to go f*** herself.”

Nicolaides recalled that Tupac seemed to find the situation amusing. “I honestly think he found it amusing,” he said. “And the truth is, I can’t blame Janet for asking. It was the early 1990s, and people were still dying of AIDS. And Tupac, God love him, had a reputation.” In the end, Tupac never took the test, but the scene was still filmed.

The tension between the two stars reflected larger issues on set. Tupac was often late, frequently high or drinking, and would sometimes ad-lib instead of following the script. Jackson, by contrast, was professional and punctual, which reportedly frustrated Tupac and added to the on-set strain.

This moment highlights both the health concerns of the early ’90s and the clash of personalities and egos in Hollywood productions. Janet Jackson’s request, while controversial, was grounded in caution, whereas Tupac’s reaction showed his defiance and confidence in his reputation.
