Jason Momoa Shaves His Beard After 6 Years — And He’s Unrecognizable: ‘I Hate It’
Jason Momoa has shocked fans by shaving off his beard for the first time in six years, and even he admits he’s not a fan of the new look. The Aquaman star showed off his clean, shaven face in an Instagram video posted Wednesday, saying, “God damn it, I hate it.”
The actor decided to ditch his signature beard as he gets ready for his next big role. Momoa will be returning as Duncan Idaho in Dune Messiah, the third and final movie in the Oscar-winning sci-fi series.
He explained in the video that it was part of his preparation for the film, saying, “Only for you, Denis,” referring to Dune director Denis Villeneuve.
Fans will remember that Momoa’s character Duncan Idaho died in the first Dune movie, released in 2021, and was absent from Dune: Part Two. But during an interview in March 2025, Momoa revealed that he will make a comeback in the third film as a clone of Duncan.
The shaving video wasn’t just about the role, it was also a chance for Momoa to promote his eco-friendly water brand, Mananalu. While running the razor over his face, he spoke about how Dune had inspired him to start the company. “I think it’s been about six years, maybe a little bit more, since I did ‘Dune.’ What was really special about that is that’s when I started launching Mananalu. At the time, we were one of the first ones to release the aluminum bottle.”
Momoa talked about his company’s mission to fight single-use plastic and mentioned its new partnership with Boomerang Water. He said they aim to reuse water bottles to help the planet and protect future generations. “For our children and for our planet,” he added.
This Dune Messiah project will also be a family affair for the Hollywood star. Momoa’s teenage son Nakoa-Wolf will appear in the movie as Leto II, the son of Paul Atreides and Chani, played by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. He’ll star alongside Ida Brooke from Silo, who has been cast as Ghanima, Leto’s twin sister.
Momoa shares Nakoa-Wolf and his daughter Lola Iolani with his ex-wife Lisa Bonet. The couple’s divorce was finalized in June 2024 after seven years of marriage.
It seems Momoa isn’t the only one changing up his look for Dune Messiah. Fans recently spotted Chalamet with a freshly shaved section on the back of his head during a trip to St. Tropez with girlfriend Kylie Jenner.
Although he covered most of his hair with a bandana and cap, some noticed the buzzed patch and began speculating if it’s connected to his role.
Dune Messiah is set to hit theaters in December 2026, giving fans plenty of time to get used to Momoa’s new, clean-cut appearance, though judging by his own reaction, that might take a while.
