Javier Bardem Just Called ‘Dune: Part Three’ a “Masterpiece,” and the Ending Sounds Wild

Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘ saga has spent two films earning a reputation as one of the most meticulously crafted sci-fi epics in recent memory, and fans have been counting down to the trilogy’s final chapter ever since ‘Dune: Part Two’ hit theaters. With production wrapped and a release date locked in, the cast has slowly started opening up about what’s coming.

That anticipation only grew this week thanks to comments from Javier Bardem, who has played Stilgar across the franchise’s run and has become one of its most vocal champions on the press circuit. Bardem has never been shy about hyping up Villeneuve’s vision, but his latest comments have pushed the excitement to a new level.

According to comments shared by Culture Crave and credited to Entertainment Tonight, Bardem described ‘Dune: Part Three’ as a “masterpiece,” adding that its ending is shaping up to be something no one saw coming. He explained that Villeneuve is pushing the story even further past its predecessor, the same way ‘Dune: Part Two’ expanded on the scale of the original film.

Bardem didn’t stop there, pointing directly at longtime readers of Frank Herbert’s source material and suggesting they should brace for a conclusion that goes beyond what’s written in ‘Dune: Messiah.’ Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor promised, “It’s going to be something extraordinary.”

That’s a bold claim considering how much affection the franchise has already earned from both critics and book purists, who have watched Villeneuve balance faithful adaptation with his own directorial instincts across two films. If ‘Part Three’ truly pushes further from its predecessor the way Bardem suggests, it would mark a significant departure from the more contained ending outlined in Herbert’s original novel.

The stakes for ‘Dune: Part Three’ extend well beyond fan expectations, too, given the sheer size of the ensemble returning and joining for the finale. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Bardem, and Florence Pugh are all set to reprise their roles, while Robert Pattinson joins the cast as Scytale, a shapeshifting Face Dancer plotting against Paul Atreides, and Anya Taylor-Joy also rounds out the ensemble.

Momoa’s involvement is particularly notable, with the actor returning not as the fan-favorite Duncan Idaho fans remember, but as Hayt, a ghola clone of the character engineered by the Tleilaxu with a secret mission to destroy Paul. Hans Zimmer is also back to compose the score, ensuring the sound of Arrakis remains consistent through the trilogy’s conclusion.

Adding another layer of intrigue to the film’s rollout is its release date, which puts ‘Dune: Part Three’ on a collision course with Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on December 18. Fans have already started nicknaming the box office showdown “Dunesday,” with some even floating comparisons to the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon that dominated theaters a few summers back.

Bardem’s confidence in the project also stands out given that his future in the franchise wasn’t always guaranteed. The actor has previously discussed uncertainty about his role heading into the finale, which makes his current enthusiasm for the script and Villeneuve’s direction feel like even more of an endorsement.

With a release date locked in and a cast this stacked, expectations for ‘Dune: Part Three’ were already sky-high before Bardem’s comments started making the rounds. Now, with one of the franchise’s most reliable hype men calling the ending “extraordinary,” the pressure on Villeneuve to stick the landing has never been higher.
