Jennifer Holland Reveals Why James Gunn Is a ‘Workaholic’ While Filming ‘Superman’ Sequel After ‘Supergirl’ Premiere
Jennifer Holland has shared new insight into how her husband James Gunn is already back at work on the upcoming Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow, just days after attending the Supergirl premiere in New York City.
Speaking to PEOPLE at a special screening event for Supergirl on June 25 in New York, Holland, 38, said Gunn did not take much downtime after the premiere held earlier that week on June 22. According to her, he left almost immediately to return to production work on the next DC project.
“He did not,” Holland said when asked if the couple stayed in New York for a break after the premiere. She explained that Gunn went straight back to work because that is simply how he operates. “He went home directly after the premiere to go film again, because he’s just—he loves it. He’s a workaholic, so it’s his favorite. He’s like, ‘Oh, gosh, life is so hard. I’m working all the time,’ and then he gets one day off, and he’s like, ‘I don’t know what to do with myself. I don’t know what to do with myself.’ So, you know, he’s happy working.”
James Gunn is currently overseeing the early phase of the new DC Universe, which launched with the recent Superman reboot starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. That universe is now expanding with Supergirl, which focuses on Kara’s journey as she travels through space and meets new characters, including Lobo, played by Jason Momoa.
Holland also confirmed that Man of Tomorrow is already in active production. The film continues the story of Superman and is currently scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Gunn is both writing and directing the project, which will again feature Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult returning as Lex Luthor.
The couple’s appearance at the Supergirl premiere highlighted their close involvement in the DC projects. Holland, who has been married to Gunn since 2022, said she spent time in New York with friends during the visit while Gunn quickly returned to work commitments.

“I was here with my friend Bonnie, and María Gabriela de Faría, who plays The Engineer in Superman,” she told PEOPLE. “She came to New York with me, and I got to show her around a little bit. She’s never been to New York, so it was her first time.”
Holland is also part of Gunn’s DC universe through her role in HBO Max’s Peacemaker, where she plays Emilia Harcourt alongside John Cena. Her character has appeared across multiple DC projects, including The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, with additional appearances still possible in future films.
When asked if she might return in upcoming Superman-related projects, Holland remained open but cautious. “I could definitely see that happening,” she said. “Obviously, I don’t know. I know as much as everyone else knows about where we’re gonna see Harcourt again. But I am keeping my arms as toned as possible in the off time, just in case, so that they’re ready for me.”
With Supergirl now in theaters and Man of Tomorrow already underway, the DC Universe continues to expand rapidly under Gunn’s leadership, with several major releases scheduled across the next few years.
