Jennifer Lawrence Reveals Why She’s Grown to Not Be So Fond of Speaking with the Press
Jennifer Lawrence is opening up about why she doesn’t enjoy talking to the press as much as she used to.
In a recent interview with The New Yorker, the Oscar-winning actress explained how doing interviews can feel like a loss of control over her work.
“Every time I do an interview, I think, ‘I can’t do this to myself again.’ I feel like I lose so much control over my craft when I have to do press for a movie,” Lawrence said.
She also reflected on how she used to come across in past interviews. When asked about old articles about her, she admitted, “Oh, no. So hyper. So embarrassing.” Fans once loved her for being quirky and authentic, but over time some people online accused her of faking her personality.
“Well, it is, or it was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism,” Lawrence said. “And so it was a defense mechanism, to just be, like, ‘I’m not like that! I poop my pants every day!’”
Lawrence also mentioned a moment when she felt particularly awkward about herself in the public eye.
She brought up Ariana Grande’s 2016 impression of her on Saturday Night Live, saying it hit a little too close to home. “I look at those interviews, and that person is annoying. I get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying. Ariana Grande’s impression of me on SNL was spot-on.”
The actress said all the attention and criticism made things feel overwhelming. “I felt—I didn’t feel, I was, I think—rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality,” she explained.
Through it all, Lawrence seems to have found a better balance. She is more careful about how much she exposes herself to the press and is focused on protecting her work and her own personality.
