Jensen Ackles may not know exactly when Russell Shaw will return to CBS’ hit series ‘Tracker,’ but the actor has made it clear that he is ready to come back whenever the show needs him.

Russell, the older brother of Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw, became a much bigger part of ‘Tracker’ during season 3. His storyline took a darker turn when he left Colter behind to investigate his own mission, keeping his actions secret from his younger brother. The season ended with plenty of questions surrounding Russell’s choices and what could happen to him moving forward.

During the season 3 finale episode “The Best Ones,” Russell’s future was left uncertain. After following clues connected to the death of their father, Ashton Shaw, Russell appeared to go in a different direction than Colter. The brothers were no longer working together, and the mystery surrounding Russell’s actions created a major question heading into season 4.

Now, Ackles has finally shared an update about his possible return. Speaking at Creation Toronto 2026, the actor was asked about his future on ‘Tracker.’ According to Robyn Phillips’ YouTube coverage of the event, Ackles explained that he is still waiting for the show to contact him about coming back.

“I dip in and out of the show, Tracker. Just started its fourth season, so, I’m waiting for the phone call,” Ackles said.

While the comment was brief, it gives fans some hope that Russell Shaw’s story is far from finished. Ackles did not suggest that he has left the series permanently, and his answer shows that he remains open to returning whenever the right storyline comes together.

The actor’s availability is likely the biggest factor behind Russell’s limited appearances. Ackles has several major projects competing for his time, including the upcoming ‘The Boys’ spinoff series ‘Vought Rising,’ where he will return as Soldier Boy while also working behind the scenes as a producer.

Despite his busy schedule, Ackles and ‘Tracker’ star Justin Hartley have both spoken positively about their time working together. Since Hartley is also an executive producer on the series, bringing Russell back appears to be something the team would like to do whenever the story allows.

With season 3 wrapping up the major mystery surrounding Ashton Shaw’s death, season 4 could open the door for a new chapter in the Shaw family story. Reuniting Colter and Russell could give the series a fresh direction while exploring the complicated relationship between the two brothers.

The production changes around season 4 could also create more opportunities for Ackles to return. The show is moving production from Vancouver to Los Angeles, which may make scheduling easier for some of its guest stars.

According to CBS’ fall 2026 schedule, ‘Tracker’ season 4 is expected to return later this year while keeping its Sunday night time slot. The exact premiere date has not been announced yet, but the season is expected to run through May, giving the show plenty of time to bring Russell back if the story calls for it.

For now, fans will have to wait and see when Colter’s brother makes his next appearance. But with Ackles clearly interested in returning, Russell Shaw’s story may not be over just yet.
