Jeremy Allen White, best known for his role in The Bear, is officially joining the Star Wars universe. The actor has confirmed that he voices Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt, in the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu.

This will be the first time Rotta appears in a live-action Star Wars project, after first being introduced in the 2008 animated movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

During an interview with Good Morning America, White talked about how his involvement in the movie came to be.

He explained that it all started after meeting Jon Favreau, who directed both The Mandalorian series and the new film. “You know, it’s funny, I met Jon Favreau, who directed the film and the series prior, and I’ve been such a huge fan of Jon’s for a very long time, and so we talked about movies and I asked about Swingers,” White said. “And he said, ‘Would you like to come in and maybe talk to me about doing a voiceover for Star Wars?’”

White said he immediately agreed but only later realized the significance of the role. “I love Star Wars, I’d be so happy to,” he recalled, adding, “and then, in the moment, almost, I discovered the weight of the character I was voicing.”

The film, directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni, continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Pedro Pascal returns as the Mandalorian, while Sigourney Weaver joins the cast as Ward, a New Republic leader, and Jonny Coyne plays an Imperial Warlord. Dave Filoni will also reprise his role as X-wing pilot Trapper Wolf.

Production on The Mandalorian & Grogu began in California in August 2024 and wrapped by December of the same year.

The movie is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. According to the official premise, the story follows the Mandalorian and Grogu as they are recruited by the New Republic after the fall of the Galactic Empire, facing new threats from scattered Imperial warlords.

The project came about after Lucasfilm decided to shift focus from a planned fourth season of The Mandalorian to a feature film instead.

During the 2023 Hollywood strikes, Favreau and Filoni took the opportunity to rework their plans for the franchise, turning what would have been another season into a big-screen continuation.

With Jeremy Allen White lending his voice to a legacy Star Wars character and Jon Favreau once again leading the project, The Mandalorian & Grogu is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases in the franchise’s next chapter.
