Jeremy Renner once spoke about what he considers his greatest movie role, and fans might be a little surprised.

On Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Renner faced a tough challenge: pick a favorite from some of his best films.

The list included hits like Arrival, The Hurt Locker, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. After a single-elimination style tournament, the final showdown was between Wind River, the 2017 crime drama, and Avengers: Endgame, the blockbuster finale to Marvel’s Infinity Saga.

Renner didn’t hesitate. “I have to go with Endgame, because of how culturally significant that is,” he said. “It required so many people and so many films – 22 films to make that 23rd film. The outcome of that, you know. To be able to weep and laugh, and… I mean we all know what that movie is right? It’s insane.”

Avengers: Endgame, released in 2019, is the direct follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War and the 22nd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the film brings together an enormous ensemble cast, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner himself, and many others.

The story focuses on the remaining Avengers and their allies as they attempt to undo the devastating effects of Thanos’ snap, which erased half of all life in the universe.

Endgame was announced as a follow-up to Infinity War back in 2014, and filming started in 2017 at Pinewood Atlanta Studios, finishing in early 2018. Additional scenes were shot in New York, Scotland, and England. With a budget estimated between $356–400 million, it became one of the most expensive films ever made.

Critics and audiences loved it. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 94% approval rating, calling it “Exciting, entertaining, and emotionally impactful”.

Metacritic scored it 78/100, and CinemaScore polls showed an A+ from moviegoers. Reviewers praised the emotional depth, the character-driven story, and the way it honored over a decade of Marvel movies. Some critics noted it was long and packed with storylines, but many still called it a satisfying and heartfelt experience.

Renner’s choice highlights just how much the movie meant to him, not only for his role but for its cultural impact. It wasn’t just a big Marvel movie; it was the culmination of 22 films and countless fan journeys. “It’s insane,” he said, reflecting on the scale and emotion involved.

It’s fascinating to see an actor weigh his career like this. Renner’s pick shows how even stars see the bigger picture, valuing the teamwork and storytelling impact over just individual performances. What do you think, would you pick Endgame as your favorite Renner film too? Share your thoughts in the comments.
