Apple TV+ has delayed the release of its new political thriller miniseries, The Savant, starring Jessica Chastain.

The streaming platform confirmed the postponement in a statement on Tuesday. “After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone ‘The Savant,’” the spokesperson said. “We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date.”

Although the company did not give a specific reason, sources suggest the delay is related to the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The series includes scenes of political violence, including a sniper attack, which may have influenced the decision. Industry insiders note that other projects have also been reconsidered or postponed after similar events.

The Savant was created by Melissa James Gibson and is inspired by a 2019 Cosmopolitan article by Andrea Stanley. The story follows Jodi Goodwin, played by Chastain, a woman who infiltrates online hate groups to stop planned attacks.

Nnamdi Asomugha co-stars as Charlie Goodwin, with Pablo Schreiber also in a major role. Chastain explained her approach to portraying the character, saying, “I wouldn’t want to look and behave exactly like her, because I want to keep her hidden.”

Chastain also released a statement addressing the postponement, saying she does not agree with the decision. “In the last five years since we’ve been making the show, we’ve seen an unfortunate amount of violence in the United States: the kidnapping attempt on Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer; the January 6th attack on the Capitol; the assassination attempts on President Trump; the political assassinations of Democratic representatives in Minnesota; the attack on Speaker Pelosi’s husband; the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk; the recent shooting at an ABC affiliate station in California; and over 300 school shootings across this country,” she said.

She added, “These incidents, though far from encompassing the full range of violence witnessed in the United States, illustrate a broader mindset that crosses the political spectrum and must be confronted. I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately it is.”

The series was originally set to premiere on September 26, with episodes releasing weekly until November 7. Variety first reported Chastain’s casting in March 2023, while Nnamdi Asomugha joined in February 2024. Additional cast members, including James Badge Dale, were announced in later months.

Deadline Hollywood reported that the postponement was announced just three days before the planned premiere. No new release date has been shared, but the move appears to reflect caution given current events and the sensitive subject matter in the show.

The Savant had been highly anticipated on Apple TV+ this year. The delay highlights the challenge of balancing storytelling with sensitivity to real-world tragedies. Personally, I think Apple made a cautious but understandable choice given the circumstances. Do you think postponing the series was the right call? Share your thoughts in the comments.
