Jinkx Monsoon Wants Marvel Studios to Cast a Trans Woman as Mystique in the MCU
Jinkx Monsoon says she wants Marvel Studios to cast a trans woman as Mystique in the upcoming X-Men reboot.
The Broadway star of Oh, Mary! and winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race opened up about the idea during an interview on Vulture’s Good One podcast.
She explained why the character has always meant something to her and to the trans community.“Can I manifest something? Marvel has now regained the rights to X-Men. I think it would be really cool to have a trans woman be Mystique,” Monsoon said. “She is my favorite Marvel character of all time, and I relate to her so much.”
Mystique has already been played on the big screen by Rebecca Romijn and later by Jennifer Lawrence in several of the X-Men films. But Monsoon believes the shape-shifting mutant carries a deeper meaning for many people.
“I think a lot of trans people do, and we think about how nice it would be to just blend in and not have everyone pay attention to us if we don’t want. And then, we also relate to the fact that she’s not accepted in her original form, so she has to transition to even walk around,” she said.
Monsoon even joked that she’s pushing her team to go after the role. “I texted my agent, I was like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on there, but please start dropping my name,’” she said on the podcast.
Her interest in Mystique comes after recent roles where she’s played larger-than-life characters, like the villain Maestro in Doctor Who and Mary Todd Lincoln in Cole Escola’s Broadway hit Oh, Mary!.
Monsoon isn’t the only one eyeing the role. Earlier this year, Euphoria star Hunter Schafer said it “would be cool” to play Mystique after fans online suggested her for the part.
Meanwhile, Rebecca Romijn, who played Mystique in the original X-Men trilogy, has been confirmed to return in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday. That movie will bring back several actors from the earlier franchise.
For now, the future of Mystique in the MCU remains open, but Jinkx Monsoon is making it clear she wants to be part of it.
