Joe Russo Confirms Thor Version Fans Will See in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ — and It’s the Best One

Few Marvel heroes have undergone as many tonal transformations as Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder, whose journey has swung wildly depending on which filmmaker held the reins. From Shakespearean royalty in the character’s earliest films to full comedic sidekick under Taika Waititi’s direction, Thor has rarely stayed in one emotional register for long.

That inconsistency has made him something of a puzzle for fans trying to predict which version might show up in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ especially given how divisive his most recent portrayals have been. Between the exaggerated comedy of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and the deliberately deflated “Fat Thor” of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ audiences have had good reason to wonder where the character goes next.

Director Joe Russo has now offered a clear answer. Speaking to CBR, Russo confirmed that ‘Doomsday’ will pull Thor back toward the version audiences saw in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ a far more hardened, driven portrayal than the character’s more recent comedic or emotionally deflated outings.

“It’s fascinating how malleable he is playing that role, and the range that he has,” Russo said. “He has a wide array of directors with different tastes and different tones that have interpreted the character. We have a specific point of view on that character. That’s what we’re going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor.”

Russo went further in describing exactly what that mindset will look like on screen, framing Thor’s arc in ‘Doomsday’ as a continuation of unresolved grief channeled into battle. “We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle,” Russo said. “Will he ever find it or not? That is the journey he will go on against the greatest foe he’s ever met. As you can see from the trailers, it’s going to be a hell of a fight.”

That framing lines up with what little has been revealed about Thor’s trajectory since ‘Endgame.’ In the years between films, Hemsworth’s character has spent time traveling and raising his adopted daughter Love, whom he took in following Gorr’s death in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,’ while reportedly taking a more reflective approach that includes praying to Odin for strength.

Fan theories have speculated that Thor could unlock either the Odinforce or Thorforce within ‘Doomsday,’ though neither possibility has been confirmed by Marvel or the Russos. Regardless of which power-up, if any, materializes, Russo’s comments suggest Thor is being positioned as a central, battle-hardened figure rather than comic relief heading into the film’s climactic confrontation.

Russo also reflected on the earlier, more controversial version of Thor seen in ‘Endgame,’ addressing the character’s physically and emotionally deflated arc that some fans found jarring at the time. Co-director Anthony Russo recalled the emotional risk involved in that portrayal, describing it as watching Hemsworth commit fully to the character’s lowest point, weight suit and all.

When asked whether that ending was designed to set up a broader team-up between Thor and other MCU figures, Anthony Russo clarified that the choice was simply about narrative fun rather than long-term franchise planning. “No, no, we just thought it was fun to do,” he said, describing the chemistry between characters as an unexpected but entertaining pairing given how adversarial their relationship once was.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, Thor’s return to a fiercer, more focused version of himself gives fans a clearer sense of where the character stands heading into the franchise’s next major showdown.
