John Cena Has No Idea When Peacemaker Will Return to the DCU, and He’s Being Very Honest About It
John Cena wants to put on the helmet again, but he genuinely does not know when that will happen.
In a new interview shared by ComicBook.com on X, the actor addressed Peacemaker’s future in the DC Universe following the character’s season two exit and a significant new timeline reveal, admitting that any concrete information about his next appearance would be “personal speculation” and firmly redirecting the question to James Gunn.
The comments came as Cena was promoting his new Netflix film ‘Little Brother,’ with the actor telling ComicBook that he still hasn’t received any direct communication from Gunn about what’s next for Christopher Smith in the wider DCU. His response, warmly self-aware and genuinely candid, landed as one of the more refreshingly honest things a superhero actor has said about their franchise future in recent memory.
That transparency is significant given where ‘Peacemaker’ left things. Season two concluded with Rick Flag Sr. throwing Christopher Smith through a portal into a dimension called Salvation, a wild ending that was clearly designed to set up future storylines rather than close the book on the character for good.
Gunn himself confirmed to CBR that a third season is not currently in the works, though he was careful not to rule it out entirely. “This is about the wider DCU, and other stories in which this will play out right now,” the DC Studios co-head said. “That doesn’t mean that there won’t be a third season of Peacemaker. I don’t want to never say never. But, right now, no. This is about the future of the DCU, and Peacemaker is an important character.”
Gunn had previously declined to confirm Peacemaker’s next appearance with characteristic humor, saying he knew the answer but could not share it “under penalty of the Safran punishment,” joking that Peter Safran uses a cigar cutter to take a joint from his finger every time he gives away a plot detail.
There has been no official announcement of Cena appearing in the upcoming ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ Gunn’s next DCU theatrical film, though it remains theoretically possible given how central the character has been to the universe’s early chapters. Peacemaker’s season two served as both a direct sequel to ‘Superman’ and a prequel to ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ positioning the character as a connective thread between major DCU installments.

At Spacecon earlier this year, Cena offered a heartfelt tribute to the role and the people around it, saying that bringing Peacemaker to life “under the mentorship of a brilliant storyteller like James Gunn” was something he treasured deeply, and that he misses his castmates and hopes they can “get back together soon.”
For now, the helmet stays on the shelf. But given how deliberately Gunn has woven the character into the DCU’s ongoing architecture, the idea of Peacemaker sitting out the next phase for long seems increasingly unlikely.
