HBO has released the first trailer for its upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series, giving fans an early look at the new cast and confirming a Christmas Day premiere, earlier than the originally expected 2027 release. The trailer was shared just a day after an initial image of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived, was revealed.

The first season adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, introducing audiences to Harry’s world as he discovers Hogwarts and his magical heritage. The trailer opens with Harry, played by McLaughlin, struggling with life at home under the harsh watch of his Aunt Petunia, played by Bel Powley.

He is seen being pushed into the cupboard under the stairs and chased by school bullies, until a letter arrives inviting him to Hogwarts. There, he meets Hagrid, portrayed by Nick Frost, who reminds him that his parents were “the kindest and bravest” people he ever knew.

Fans also got their first full look at John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, appearing in his signature wizard robe and long beard, fully embodying the wise and mysterious headmaster.

Other key characters teased in the trailer include Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and the young Hogwarts students Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) and Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton). Scenes aboard the Hogwarts Express hint at the magical friendships and challenges ahead for the new students.

The trailer sets the tone for the series as a fresh take on the classic story, while staying faithful to the book’s core. The new adaptation promises to explore familiar moments from Harry’s first year with updated visuals and performances from a completely recast ensemble.

Seeing Lithgow fully dressed as Dumbledore is a real highlight. He brings a commanding presence to the role, and the casting choices so far suggest HBO is committed to balancing nostalgia with a bold, modern reimagining. I’m curious to hear what everyone else thinks, do you love the new look for Hogwarts and Dumbledore? Share your thoughts in the comments.
