Johnny Depp has never hidden his love for music, but he’s also been outspoken about actors who jump into a music career just because they are famous.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald during the 2015 Berlin Film Festival while promoting his spy comedy Mortdecai, Depp shared strong feelings about this trend.

“That whole idea for me is a sickening thing, it’s always just made me sick,” he said. Depp, who has played guitar for years and often collaborates with friends on music projects, made it clear that his own approach is very different. “I’ve been very lucky to play on friends’ records, and it’s still going. Music is still part of my life. But you won’t be hearing The Johnny Depp Band. That won’t ever exist.”

He explained that he dislikes when actors use their movie fame to draw attention to their music. “I hate the idea, ‘Come see me play the guitar because you’ve seen me in 12 movies’. It shouldn’t be (that way). You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music,” he added.

While Depp didn’t name anyone specifically, fans have speculated he could be referring to actors like Jared Leto, who formed the band 30 Seconds to Mars, Jamie Foxx, who released several R&B albums after his Oscar-winning role in Ray, or Michael Cera, who joined the indie band Mister Heavenly.

Despite his criticism, Depp has continued to perform and tour as a musician. In early 2023, he announced a tour with his band Hollywood Vampires and even posted a heartfelt video on TikTok thanking his fans.

“To all of my most treasured, loyal and unwavering supporters. We’ve been everywhere together, we have seen everything together. We have walked the same road together. We did the right thing together, all because you cared. And now, we will all move forward together,” he said.
