The future of Pirates of the Caribbean is still unclear, but new reports suggest Disney is actively reshaping the direction of the franchise. After the last film released in 2017, the series has been stuck in development for years, with different scripts, spin-off ideas, and casting plans all being discussed at different times.

Now, a new report from The InSneider claims that Disney leadership sees the franchise as a priority again. According to the report, new studio leadership under Josh D’Amaro and Dana Walden wants to bring Pirates of the Caribbean back with a refreshed direction. The goal, according to the report, is to return to the tone of the original films while also modernizing the story and controlling costs with a smaller budget.

One of the most talked-about details in the report is the idea that the next film could focus on Jack Sparrow’s son. At the same time, Margot Robbie is also said to be part of the project in some form. This has led to speculation that earlier plans for a separate Pirates spin-off starring Robbie may now be merged into the main sixth film.

The report also claims that writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns is attached to develop the script. However, none of this has been officially confirmed by Disney.

The idea of changing the main character direction raises questions about Johnny Depp’s future in the franchise. His role as Captain Jack Sparrow has defined Pirates of the Caribbean since 2003, but his involvement in future films has remained uncertain for years. Earlier reports suggested the franchise could move forward without him, while newer comments from producer Jerry Bruckheimer have pushed back against that idea.

Bruckheimer has repeatedly said that the script is still in progress and nothing is final. Speaking in a past interview, he explained the importance of getting the story right before moving forward. He said, “If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen.” This confirms that the project is still in early development and could change again.

More recently, Bruckheimer also commented on casting rumors and returning characters. He confirmed that discussions about Margot Robbie have taken place, but he denied one specific rumor about Jack Sparrow’s son being confirmed as the main lead. His comments suggest that while ideas are being explored, nothing has been finalized for the story structure or characters.

At the Producers Guild Awards in 2026, Bruckheimer also responded to speculation about Johnny Depp’s return. He pushed back on claims that the franchise was moving away from Depp entirely. He said, “That’s not true,” and added, “If it’s up to me, he’ll be in it.” This statement suggests that Depp’s return is still possible, depending on how the script develops and what Disney ultimately decides.

The situation highlights how unstable the project still is. On one side, reports suggest Disney is planning a new direction with younger characters and possibly a generational shift. On the other side, key creative figures are still expressing interest in bringing back the original cast, especially Depp’s Jack Sparrow.

The Pirates franchise has struggled to find a clear path forward since its last release. The 2017 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales underperformed critically, even though it made strong box office returns. Since then, Disney has tried multiple approaches, including spin-offs and reboots, but none have moved into full production.
