Jon Favreau has confirmed that the upcoming Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is connected to the second season of the Ahsoka series.

The filmmaker shared details with Empire Magazine about where Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, is headed in this new adventure alongside his companion, Grogu.

Favreau explained that the Mandalorian is taking a new approach to his work. “One of the last things we say [in Season 3] is, like, ‘I don’t want to go out there and just be a hired gun. I want to work for the good guys,’” he said.

This change in direction brings Djarin into missions for characters like Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward and reunites him with fan-favorite Zeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels. Favreau called the Mandalorian a compelling character, noting that even viewers who haven’t seen Rebels will enjoy his voice, swagger, and physical skills.

The film will primarily focus on the relationship between Djarin and Grogu. “That central relationship, as they go off and face adventure together, that’s the underpinning of the film,” Favreau said. He added that the story explores growth and progression, showing how characters evolve and learn from each other.

The movie and a show will be connected through Zeb Orrelios: “Zeb allows us to tie in what’s happening with Ahsoka.” He said.

Set after the fall of the Galactic Empire, The Mandalorian and Grogu follows the duo as they are enlisted by the New Republic to confront remaining Imperial warlords. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 22, 2026, and will have an IMAX release.

Meanwhile, the second season of Ahsoka will continue the story of Ahsoka Tano and her Jedi apprentice Sabine Wren, who are stranded in a different galaxy while Grand Admiral Thrawn and the remnants of the Empire challenge the New Republic.

Produced by Lucasfilm and Golem Creations, the series has Dave Filoni as showrunner. The connection between the film and the series is expected to expand the shared Star Wars universe even further.
