Marvel originally set up Kang the Conqueror as the major villain for the Multiverse Saga, a plan first announced at Comic-Con 2019.

Jonathan Majors first appeared in the MCU as He Who Remains in Loki Season 1, and later as Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. His character was intended to be the central threat across multiple Marvel films.

However, Majors’ legal troubles in early 2023 put his MCU future in doubt.

The actor was arrested on assault charges involving his then-girlfriend, which delayed his trajectory as Kang. While he was acquitted on some charges, a judge later sentenced him to probation and a domestic violence intervention program.

Majors made his MCU debut in Loki Season 1, Episode 6, playing a Kang variant who had won the Multiversal War and was in charge of the Sacred Timeline.

His character was killed by Sylvie in the finale, but Majors returned as Kang the Conqueror in Quantumania. There, Kang was ultimately defeated by Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne. Despite the defeat, the character was still set up to be the big villain of the Multiverse Saga; he even returned in Loki season 2 as a new variant, Victor Timely.

Speaking to The Sun U.S. in September, Majors was asked about returning as Kang. He remained noncommittal but left the door open:

“I cannot say anything about that. Well, it’s a Multiverse, so there’s always that. Always a lot of opportunity for that.”

He also expressed gratitude toward fans, saying he was “very glad” that some want him back in the role.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained that the decision to replace Kang was already in motion before Majors’ legal issues became public.

“Even before what had happened to the actor, we had started to realize that Kang wasn’t Thanos,” Feige told the press.

He explained that only Doctor Doom could fill the role of a villain comparable to Thanos, and Marvel now has the rights to use Doom after acquiring Fox. “We had started talking about Dr. Doom even before we officially pivoted from Kang. In fact, I had started talking with Robert [Downey Jr.] about this audacious idea before Ant-Man 3 even came out.”

While Majors’ future in the MCU remains uncertain, it’s highly unlikely for him to return. His comments suggest that Marvel’s multiverse concept could allow for the character to appear in some form, even if he is no longer the main antagonist or wanted for that matter.
